The standard tourist route to Irelands highest mountain. There are now footbridges crossing the rivers contained in this video. Route is easier/safer now.

Very enjoyable. I've now done Devil's ladder, O'Shea's Gully and Central Gully. That's the order of difficulty. Some day I will do Heavenly Gates. . The Devil's Ladder is very doable so long as you have good gear, reasonable fitness and a decent sense of balance when scrambling over rocks. The challenge is more the weather than the difficulty of the route. Pretty much all routes up Carrauntoohill become waterfalls at times due to heavy rain and the rocks are treacherous.

I can't believe I only climbed it for the first time last year! Will be attempting it again in August, thanks for the great video, you have a new subscriber! 🙂
  • Been there. Done that. 👍👍 Very slippery rocks indeed! The most dangerous part is the devil's ladder (appropriately named). If there are other people above you, (climbing or descending), as people step on them lose rocks, they may become dislodged and come rolling down at you!

My father, my brother and I climbed it last July. The weather conditions were fucking atrocious, sleet, frost rain, you name it. But it was probably my favorite climb and I am an experienced mountain climber. It was truly one of a kind with not a single tree on the mountain which is common in Ireland but rare elseware. The views were spectacular but at the summit I couldn't see the back of my hand. We lost my father and nearly fell off a cliff but it was a true one of a kind experience that I won't forget.

Right, I see a few people saying they thought that the Devils Ladder was closed.... I would just like to point out that it is impossible to "close" a route up a mountain (especially in Ireland). Like what do you expect them to do, put barriers up around the gully? it's not as simple as closing off a damaged road or that.... I do agree however that the devils ladder is badly eroded, mainly due to way too many tourists who haven't a clue what they are doing going up the route. For people who want to climb Carrauntoohil, I would recommend getting some proper gear and an ordance survey map of the area and then go up the mountain via The Heavenly gates or O'Sheas gully, which are much more enjoyable routes and although they might be a little harder is well worth the effort. Even if you are not confident doing the routes yourself, you can hire a guide who will bring you up the mountain.

Climbed it today up and down thought devil's ladder, no experience, no map, made it down to tell my story. Don't try if you are a beginner like me.

I am going to climb this mountain in a few months maybe Feb or march out of the sheer boredom and anger at life's BS.... what prep work would you recommend for this climb? Hiking boots or shoes? What to bring and all that Any advice is very much appreciated

is the caher route less dangerous than the devil's ladder route ? I did the devil's ladder route before but now mother is doing it with me and I'm just worried about going up the ladder if she trips or turns her ankle on the rocks. what would you recommend?
