Pokémon was inspired by bug catching and Digimon was inspired by Tamagotchis. They're really not that similar, but they're similar enough that I can see why some people would think that one of them intentionally copied the other.

    - Digimon FTW - Big differences between the two is that in Pokemon battles are sport while in Digimon 99% of the time they're fighting for their lives (There was death quite a bit in the series). Power wise Digimon vastly outmatch majority of Pokemon and are way more intelligent. - The anime scenes with Red are from a special Pokemon Origins. Mainly exist to promote Gen 6

fun fact, in a episode, Tai actually punched two Bakemon ghost digimon, and hit a third with a pipe. Kids not afraid to get violent. His sisters even worse, her digimon got into a hair pulling fight with a female devil and was yelling "punch her lights out!"

The fact that Digimon could talk is what sold it for me as a kid. What's better than a Magic Fighting Dog best friend? A TALKING MAGIC FIGHTING DOG BEST FRIEND!!! Like would you rather have a Flareon or Red XIII as a best friend?

Tai punching Red was so in character, since in Digimon, the kids would punch a lot, especially Tai and Matt

"I though Digimon was knock off Pokemon" To this day it hurts to know that Digimon never got as popular as it could because of this mindset :( Most people never even gave it chance Digimon started as edgier Tamagochi that could battle, it was a pet raising simulator but with fights, the original name was V-Pets if I'm correct, and they were released about a year after Pokemon released in Japan, back in 1996, but they were just that, Tamagochi made to sell for boys since it was mostly popular with girls, never intended as a pokemon clone. Digimon was a pet raising game with combat. Pokemon was a monster collector RPG. However with time Digimon games evolved and now you have two variants, the RPG's where you raise a team of Digimon to battle and do quests to progress the story. And pet raising Digimon games where you have 1-2 Digimon that constantly grow old, die and come back with stronger stats. If anything, Digimon tries new concepts all the time unlike Pokemon wich in the main titles mostly stuck with what works, and honestly that's kinda ok.

This is one of my personal favourites, even though I saw my childhood kill my other childhood.

The whole monster and evolution thing is basically the only thing digimon has in common with Pokemon. One main difference is that digimon rarely have thematic evolution lines and any given digimon could have dozens of potential evolution choices. And that’s not even taking into account fusion. Plus, as shown in the Death Battle, Digimon as a whole as a lot stronger than Pokemon.

Something that they glossed over for digimon is that in several of the games, digivolving restores their hitpoints and mp/mana in addition to increasing their base stats. So if they were using game logic here, Augumon would literally be healing off all damage dealt each time, making the fight even more busted.

To be honest while Pokemon and Digimon have a lot of cosmetic similarities, in terms of structure, power levels and plot Digimon is probably overall a better comparison to Dragon Ball Z than it is to Pokemon

Digimon wasn't made to rip-off Pokemon, it was made to succeed Tagamotchi. They wanted to target older kids. They started as toys, like Tagamotchi. Only they added one particularity with the Digimon Tagamotchi-like toys: The ability to fight other Digimon. Once that became famous, they decided to make an anime. And oh boy! It was amazing! I hope that I got that right.

The main difference is that in Pokemon, trainers fight for fun, where in Digimon, the kids are fighting for their lives and eventually, the whole world...
  • @KingZolem
The thing were they went "Wait he just digivolved" was a reference to the controversy Mega Evolution faced when it was first revealed for Gen 6, when people called it a rip-off of Digimon with the temporary changes to more powerful forms. While people came to love Mega Evolution calling it a digimon ripoff was very common in the months leading up to the games release.
  • Red is actually in his early 20’s as of today. Also canonically never speaks in the games. Probably because he was living on top of a frozen mountain for a few years but that’s neither here nor there
  • Broomstick: He’s greeted by a bouncing pink blob that can talk. Koromon: I’m you friend! Duck: Didn’t heard Boomstick because he was talking. They can talk?!?

I grew up with this show and knew it would be a slaughter. Metal Greymon alone completely outclassed Mega Charizard. Not to mention he technically had one more form they did not bring up. War Greymon can combine with an equally powerful Digimon called Metal Garurumon to become the all powerful Omni-mon. But it was a one-on-one-ish fight so no merging this time, not that he even needed to. Also, unlike pokemon trainers, the Digi Destined had no problems personally throwing down when needed.
  • @Arvenyte
Just so you know, it doesn't matter much which came first because Digimon was based on Tamagotchi. The mon in the end of their names is just an abbreviation of "monsters", and it's the only real similarity.
  • The digivolution levels are: - Baby (when they just born from the egg - In-training (when they slowly start developing limbs or inteligence like Koromon - Rookie (their child form like Agumon) - Champion (their adult form) - Ultimate (like a more powerfull and develop adult form) - Mega (their last stage and ultimate form) In the original japanese version they are called: Fresh or Baby Level 1, Baby Level 2, Child, Adult, Perfect and Ultimate (which makes sense If you think about It)

Something to note about Digimon. Unlike the majority of Pokemon, Digimon evolution lines branch out and overlap basic in their personality and environment. The Death Battle briefly mentioned how Greymon transformed into SkullGreymon instead of MetalGreymon, but much more than "Good or Evil" forms. For ex: Agumon can not only grow to became Greymon, but is also became a Tyrannomon (a red dinosaur), a Meramon (a human-like guy made of fire), or a Birdramon (a giant fire bird ) And each of those have like 2 to 4 have their own evolution branches.
