Apparently when something is marked as "junk" in Japan it more accurately translates to "untested" rather than "garbage" or "rubbish" as we would normally assume.

Japan: Junk (Still works) Other countries: Slightly used (missing internals)
  • @Levy_Wilson
In Japan, when something is labeled as junk, that typically means it just wasn't tested.
  • "I reset it to factory defaults..." YOU WHAT? "... not before making a backup" Oh thank god.

A $1 wii console is like the start of a creepypasta from 2010

I love that it has a fully functional GameCube integrated into it. It's probably the last time Nintendo made such a grand gesture towards their customer base.

This video is the epitome of "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

I got a Wii at launch, and a few days in, broke the sensor bar. A little research showed that the 'sensor' bar was just a series of infrared lights, and the actual sensor is in the Wiimote. So, we used candles. One on each side of the television. It worked MUCH better than the sensor bar ever did (as a candle gives off a LOT more infrared light than the bar). Also, it gave the Wii a kind of, ritualized, holy status. To play involved a ritual of lighting candles. Magic.

From my perspective, this is a magic man burning a green plank to make a light brighter.
  • ya'know, this is usually how creepypastas start, right? "So, I bought a Wii labeled 'junk' for a dollar"

I had this exact problem with my wii, no component output. After watching your video I decided to see if this would work on mine too, and I'm happy to say that it was successful. Great video, it 100% helped.

Second-hand console markets US: * Doesn't work * Been in a suspicious number of housefires * Inhabited by a really racist ghost * Do not feed after midnight Cost: $248 (non-negotiable, local pickup) Japan: * Perfect condition * Mario Galaxy disc in the DVD slot * 10,000 Yen note in the SD slot * Hermetically sealed * Owner admits to have accidentally breathed on it too hard Cost: Will pay you $20 to take it as long as you never tell anyone that the owner dared to breathe oxygen near it. Free shipping.

Congrats on the fix dude! Glad to hear my thread still helps people from time to time. Excellent troubleshooting, and excellent bodge. Looking forward to the next video!
  • I love those dodgey repairs. There was almost no way to know that de-soldering would break the pads over twisting. Now we ALL know thanks to you. That’s how we progress and learn

How beautifully put. Thank you, my dad went to school for system engineering late 80’s and he was always doing stuff like this. It made me feel like at was looking at him again.
