41.3 Building the radial vault ceiling forms

Published 2020-02-24
In preparation for shooting the gunnite on the roof of our earth sheltered home, we needed to put up some forms that would keep the concrete up in the right place.  The radial vaults have simple curvature, so the plan was to build the forms from boards pressed up against the steel arches.  Making that happen took some compromises in the plan.  As usual, challenges arose.  Enjoy.

Your younger boy is turning into quite the ham, haha I hate using pressed wood products where they will get any exposure, they are so dimensionally unstable. I have had a couple projects ruined over the years just from humidity changes. Works great indoors but MDF and hard board (and it's evil twin peg board) are no good in high humidity areas. I wonder if treating it with some like Thompsons or a polyurethane would have helped. The edges are still hopeless however. I hope the pour/spray went well, I sure have enjoyed following your build the last couple years.

If the crew still have not been out to do the pour, just an idea to strengthen the forms before they come how about making a half circular forms made up of plywood and 3 by 2 offcuts! once made you could place them on the edges of each of the arches as you have enough space for them to rest on the arch and push firmly into the underside of the batons!. Like I said it's an idea to think about!
  • impressive progress. did the rain end up in the basement before you shot the ceiling?
