Judgment Retrospective:
With Kiryu's journey now finished (tries to ignore the Yakuza 8 promotion) we now continue on with our adventures in Kamurocho with a new face and title as in Judgment we follow, a former detective, Takayuki Yagami, as goes about looking to bring justice into the streets of this corrupt town. With Yagami coming into the lime light it begs the question if he's a good replacement for Kiryu...he's not but there's a good reason for that and you'll have to watch the video to hear what it is.

Yakuza 7 got me into the series, and I had the platinum a month and a half later. Then, while checking the overview (press down on the PS main menu), I chuckled seeing the pun they set up on the "More from this series" screen. They had "Solve a Mystery" (Judgment) and "Rewrite History" (Yakuza 0) next to each other, and I instantly knew what my next game was. Moving into the brawler style combat, I can safely say that Judgment helped with so much of my frustration for action games; I tried getting into Devil May Cry ~6 months ago, but it felt overwhelmingly deep, and I was out after the first V chapter 😅. Judgment helped break that curse by having some similar elements like directional attacks and lock-on-to-dodge. Legitimately, the first time I figured out the quickstep, I said "OHHH, it's like DMC!" That mentality, combined with my maturing past the whole "button mashing bad" mindset, really helped the combat click for me! Cut to three weeks later, I finished the story and loved every second of it. I did play with the English dub on, and the cast was nothing but A- and S- tiers all the way! You already gushed about it, but Crispin Freeman slaps as Kaito; that was a perfect casting choice. Surprisingly overlooked, though, is Greg Chun as Yagami. He's got the exact voice I'd expect for a streetwise detective, and he 100% fits Yagami's appearance. Matt Mercer as Kuroiwa owned every scene, but when doesn't Matt Mercer overdeliver? A neat thing is that Greg and Matt had key roles in Like A Dragon as well, and with both of those characters having upcoming roles in Gaiden and Infinite Wealth, I'm interested to see if they hold onto the two star VAs. Hell, I could drone on about this game for hours if I had someone to talk to about it! The postgame grind for friendship quests (ALL MY HOMIES HATE MAHJONG), VR money collecting, and finishing the last two side cases all leave me with plenty of time to reflect (like the sewer job level grinding in 7 😬). Once I complete Judgment, I'm thinking of going straight into LJ to tide me over until Infinite Wealth in '24. In the meantime, videos like this one help tide me over until I get a ron or tsumo! 😅

Lost Judgments fixes nearly all your issues with the combat and is arguably the best fighting system in the franchise.

Judgment and Lost judgment are amazing. Some of the most fun ive had playing "yakuza" games, some of the best narratives as well. Whats crazy is that the combat goes from great, to legit best in the series in lost judgment. The dragon engine reaches its peak in that game and the tech you can pull off is insane. In this game a great way to negate the dragon engine bounce back when fighting is doing the leapfrog+square to get them stunned, as well as tiger style charge attacks, and in LJ the bounce back pretty much becomes non existent. In terms of your gripe with the ex gauge, landing a successful flux fissure will give a ton of heat so use those often and you wont find yourself running out of heat. I saw you trying to do them through the video but you may have missed the timing because if you do it correctly theyll fly back. Great video tho.

When you first meet Mr. Try and Hit Me, did anyone else just run into them, jumping over them, and then punching the back of their head like- almost immediately?

Watching because I miss this game. It's one of my favorite platinums. I hated playing mahjong more than I did the drone race. Thanks Riku, awesome vid as always.
  • @n00b_ninja
Nice! Waiting for lost judgement retrospective 😊
  • Omg you did the exact same thing as me when I first played it, I dropped the game for half a year and picked it back and finished thinking omg I should have completed it sooner
  • @shehzad_ali
I am playing this at the moment, it's really good however I hate that one of the sub stories is locked behind getting a win in mahjong based on luck. Even Yakuza 4 did not do that.
  • @vinegar4556
Yagami complaining about having to wear a suit while simultaneously looking rad as hell with it on will never not floor me.

I was holding on watching this video since RGG hadn't had released judgement on pc, I mean I bought an Xbox series s just to play the judgment games, but I'm so happy they were able to release them on PC If you can, checkout in a video the mission where you are tasked to defeat the Keihin gang, it's a culmination of all your allies & friends made thru the substories. Hopefully you were able to finish LaD7!

If you ever plan on covering Lost Judgment. All i can say is, have an absolute blast with the gameplay.
  • @mats4060
Honestly The first Judgement just feels More wholesome for sum odd reason... Just fucking love it eventhough Lost Judgement has better combat and fucking love zipping around with that skateboard😅
  • @keeper2335
I will say, I found the Flux move in Tiger Style to be the greatest source of EX gauge. Pull it off correctly and not only do you get a full bar, but you often times one shot an enemy. It's... Kinda nutty.
  • Im waiting for the lost judgment coverage. Top 2 with yakuza 0 imo. Interested to see your experience with it
  • Having tried tirelessly to finish this game (Which resulted in A few spankings from my Father because literally every night when I needed to go to bed, A cutscene’d be playing and I didn’t want to ruin the immersion.), I’m just popping in to see how you regard it. The point I’m currently in in the video is you talking about the story, so that’s why I’m typing this, nos, so as to not get any bias from any comments you’ve made on how you percieve it. In my view, Judge Eyes is amazing, and the end credits scene was the nail in the coffin for letting my hunger for more story Rest In Peace. Even though I’ve been told Arpeggio is the game’s main theme and is supposed to be played in the title, I only heard it in the credits, but that being so, that is what put my other hunger, the hunger for an emotional, upbeat end, to rest, as well. I’ll stop gibbering and read your video (I say read because when you’re reading, you’re watching words or pictures and decoding them into their meaning, which is the same as person-to-person or online media.).
  • I wonder what the color of ryujis suit would symbolize, daigos, or nishtani the 3
