Joe Biden has become the first president in almost 60 years to abandon a campaign for re-election.

The president announced the news on social media and stated that he would be supporting the vice-president Kamala Harris in the race to become the Democratic Party’s nominee. Ms Harris said “my intention is to earn and win this nomination”.

Mr Biden has long faced questions about his ability to serve a second term as president. A disastrous stumbling TV debate with the Republican candidate Donald Trump brought the criticism to a head and had led to pressure from senior Democrats for Mr Biden to withdraw from the race.

Following Mr Biden’s announcement, former President Barack Obama called him “one of America’s most consequential presidents”. Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker, also praised Joe Biden and his decision to step aside.

Donald Trump said Mr Biden “was not fit to run for president, and is certainly not fit to serve”. Some senior Republicans in Congress called on Mr Biden to resign immediately as President rather than serving the remainder of his term of office.

I wonder if we will now see nonstop MSM coverage saying Trump is too old.
  • 3:02 Hillary Clinton edged out Bernie Sanders for the Democrat nomination, NOT Biden. Joe Biden did not run for president in 2016. Pretty bad mistake to make as a news broadcaster, BBC. Do better than that.
  • Abandons? Sounds like clickbait to me. If you’re going to be a top running news program, your going to have stop that kind of nonsense.
  • @jt4972.
He didn't abandon anything. He was pushed out.
  • @peternguyen462
Why keep saying Joe drop out , this is Democrats kicking him outside 😂😂😂
  • Abandons really? so dramatic. He has gracefully stepped down. All news outlets are so sensational now I only watch once a month. So ridiculous.
  • @LucasDonates
The only thing I'm pretty sure of is the whole world is watching this, and even more, some autocratic dictators you know where.
  • I’m voting blue for the world. The whole world is scared and kissing Trumps butt no need.

Hardly wait for a debate Harris - Trump! Harris will make Trump minced meat!! 😂
  • @Kyuubiify
Lol... Kamela Harris... 😂😂😂 What a joke
  • Remember when Nikki Haley said earlier this year, 'the first party to retire its 80 year old candidate will win the election?' Bet she's rethinking that now
  • @17Perez
He took too long to drop out, but better late than never. He wants Harris, but the people should be the ones to decide. There needs to be a mini primary or some other way for the people to voice their vote as to who they want as the democratic candidate for president.

But what did push Biden to abandon? Because even if many of democrats asked him to go, he always trusted himself and was confident for this elections.
  • @Mkbshg8
So, the big twist is it'll be the first female president...
  • Trump has such little class, seemingly forgetting that Biden just last week called him post shooting attempt to wish him well, dropping bipartisanship to do so
