Clearly the right thing to do. Such a wonderful story that means so much to the Japanese family and to the American family.

This is one of the reasons why I respect America and Americans as a Japanese. I believe a lot of Americans are compassionate. Thank you very much.

You have more in common with your enemies then the guys that tell you to fight eachother.

Great story. I suspect there must be thousands more hinomaru flags that sadly were never returned before the US vet passed away. This guy did the right thing. The real message is war is such a waste of lives and ruiner of families. Thanks for sharing.

I have two of these flags that I would be inteested in returning. One was bought home by my grandfather who was a gunners mate on LST 622, and was at the Battle of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines, and the Battle of Okinawa. The other flag I purchasd from the godson of Medal of Honor recipient Joseph McCarthy, who obtained the flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
  • These are a lot of these around -sadly; many are kept by "collectors" who have no respect or dignity. These things literally have names of the families who inscribed them, yet some "collectors" are keeping them for their own greed.

I've seen a lot of these videos of yosegaki hinomaru flags being returned but this was has been the most touching by far.

I also have a Japanese war flag, we know who this solder was, where he lived, his town and the mayors name all inscribed on it, ive been in touch with the local mayor and the towns council dept to seek out more information, the second letter went months ago, the first one took 9 months to get a reply, I hope that the don't take as long this time around as time is not on anyones side, there is quite a long story attached to mine, but I think its time this one that I own, sorry I am only custodian of this flag, it needs to be returned to its true family. Its a shame that the Obon society can't get some sort of funding or sponsorship for there outstanding dedication to help to repatriate these lost souls/flags, its a shame that local governments don't see this as a sense of urgency.

OBON 2015: 70 years-70 flags The mission of OBON 2015 is to help veterans, their families, and other citizens, return Yosegaki Hinomaru (Good Luck Flag) that were taken from Japanese soldiers in WWII following battles. WWII Veterans and OBON2015 co-founders Rex and Keiko Ziak will reunite flags with families and communities in Japan
  • I'm sad that so many people in the comment section aren't ready to let go of the animosity forged by a war that they didn't fight. As for this video, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
  • i think the bittersweet thing about these stories is that these flags may have been destroyed or lost forever if they weren't stolen from them, im really glad there's so many stories of them being returned
