It's been a hard week... managing burnout just when I think I've got it figured out

Published 2020-04-10
It's been a hard week, or should I say couple of weeks, especially leading up to world autism awareness day last week. I'm clearly still learning how to manage burnout and give myself enough down time to adequately recover.

// WELCOME TO ASPERGERS FROM THE INSIDE!!

My name is Paul and I discovered I have Aspergers at age 30.
If you're new you can check out a playlist of some of my most popular videos here: youtube.com/c/aspergersfromtheinside/playlists

Yes, I know, I don't look autistic. That's exactly why I started this blog, because if I didn't show you, you would never know.

As the name suggests, this channel is devoted to giving you insight into the world of Aspergers.
This blog started off being just my story, but I've learned SO MUCH about my own condition
from meeting others on the Autism Spectrum that now I make sure to feature their stories as well.

I've come a long way in my own personal journey.
Now I'm sharing what I've found so you don't have to learn it the hard way too.

// WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS BLOG

You can expect me to get to the point with concise useful information.
I focus on what is most important and don't shy away from difficult topics.

The best way to learn about Autism is to see it in real life ( i.e. via the stories of many, many people on the spectrum).

In this channel I endeavour to show you what Autism and Aspergers look like in real people and to also give you some insight as to what's happening on the inside.
I upload a new video every weekend with some bonus content thrown in mid-week too.
There's always new stuff coming through so be sure to check back and see what you've missed. (Is this where I'm supposed to tell you to hit that subscribe button?)

Topics Include:
- What is Aspergers/Autism?
- Aspie Tips, coping strategies, and advice on common issues
- Learning Emotional Intelligence (this is my special interest!)
- Autism in real life: stories from special guests

Everything I do is and endeavour to go deeper and take you 'behind the scenes' to understand what may, at first glance, seem 'odd'.
oh, and I love busting stereotypes and turning preconceptions upsidedown :)

// ABOUT ME

I discovered I have aspergers at the age of thrity.
It has been my life's mission to understand these funny creatures we call humans.
My special interest is a combination of emotional intelligence, psychology, neuroscience, thinking styles, behaviour, and motivation. (I.e. what makes people tick)
My background is in engineering and I see the world in systems to be analysed.
My passion is for taking the incredibly complex, deciphering the pattern, and explaining it very simply.
My philosophy is that blogging is an adventure best shared.

// EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TRAINING

I also run autism friendly online emotional intelligence training. So if you like my direct, systematic style, and would like to improve your own emotional intelligence skills, check it out here:

  • The “one more time” sentiment is one I know all too well. Any time I get just a little bit of extra energy, I pour it into my creative writing. Once the project is over for the day, I’m right back to where I started with the zombie-mode burnout. Being burned out is no fun at all and I can see how it could be compared to depression. Anyways, I love your videos, Paul. Thanks for this channel!

I can relate so much with the tiredness. Take it easy, and take your time.
  • I know the feeling. I enjoy gardening. The problem is, plants can not wait. They need watering, planting, removing weeds when they need it, not when I have the strength to do it. So in a while it can just get too much, especially with kids. Lately I have just decided to do as much as I can. Previously I have ended up with burnout because I put too much pressure on myself and also my father has been a bad influence, because he wants things to be perfect.

I understand... ever since this pandemic started, I had to create a totally new routine.

I wish my adult son could explain himself to others the way you do. Although he’s about to finish college (at home now), I’ve never been able to get him to advocate for himself so people will understand him a little better - the “why’s” of his behavior. Your videos are great - just watch out for the “empty tank”! (I really crash when the adrenalin runs out!).

Bless you! Thank you for being so honest. These are terrible times for us all. My brother and lodger are both high functioning aspies, and my (lovely) mum was aspie. The social isolating has been relatively easy for us, and my special needs adopted teen. But The Fear takes its toll. And I broke my wrist. Take care and stay strong. Take time off and relax. 🙏✨✨✨✨💕
  • @savanaerie
Well done on all you've achieved. Pls take care of and be gentle with urself now 🌹.

When I saw the thumbnail of this video I was like “wow same.” Also, while I had this video paused I thought about how computer screens might be made easier to look at, and the two ideas I came up with were: - make them bigger but farther away, or - make them not emit their own light.
  • I'm really thankful that you talk about your struggles and feelings. This helps to bring awareness to the fact that people on the spectrum have these struggles and helps people to be able to relate.

Did this today, too tired, overwhelmed. I'm starting to understand it thanks to your explanation and willingness to share your experiences.

Fun Facts about Autism for Kids is brilliant! You did a great job, and ... now you know that for +14 intense work days, - 3 down days will not be enough (or something in that neighborhood), and what you need now is to have a cushion in place for when you have to do it all by yourself, but your internal gyroscope just pulls you away from doing anything constructive. I try to have a "vacation worth" of extra clean clothes for such times, some long-range storage food on hand, and then I just vegitate for as long as you I need. The COVID-19 shutdown of so many places means that I've gone from 5 jobs to 1 job, to be done from home. It looks to be long enough for me to catch up on many, many things. Be kind to yourself. You're unique, and we need your voice.
  • Just allow yourself to rest as much as you can. Order Takeout/delivery. Aspies we understand how hard this for you Paul. We love your content & we care about you so be good to yourself this weekend! I get the "I don't like making promises" because I'm like this & it even erks me if I don't say it out loud because it niggles me in my head 🙁 If you plant could hug you I'm sure it would 🌿-" I am so happy that my Paul is looking after me I provide him with good oxygen" 🙋
  • @Sandman03276
Support goes both ways. You've given so much to all of us, and I get all the points you've shared today. Cheering you on and I trust you will recharge and come back strong.
  • @Signingman
One thing that helps me is walking, because it reduces the 'work hard, relax hard, and nothing in between' nature of Aspergers by setting a more reasonable baseline. Using a treadmill beneath a standing desk works great; just make sure you limit it to one hour a day to avoid body asymmetries. It's amazing what one hour can do, especially on the weekends.
  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your videos and the hard work that you put into them. Take it easy, please. Try not to fret too much. It's hard on all of us right now, especially all of us in the ASD community.
  • @saraadair5446
God bless you . I have been experiencing a low as well but I appreciate your heart and vulnerability !!! You are changing lives 🙏🌈
  • @kimmyrarity811
I love your videos, Paul. They help me understand limitation in myself that I never really understood before. I hope you start feeling better!! Rest well!
  • @shinotenshi7168
Hi Paul, hope you enjoy your time off and are able to take care of yourself.
  • Perfect timing for me to see this video - I’m in that day right now. Not sad, not depressed but it feels/looks like it from the outside. You’ve articulated for me where I’m at, and now I understand me a little more today. Thank you
  • @hopegoodwin2728
Thank you for all you do, it's super helpful and greatly appreciated. Your vids help tremendously with how I interact with and understand my fam on the spectrum. Ain't nothing wrong with breaks.
