Published 2016-12-06
China's enormous infrastructure spending was often invoked as a model for the U.S. in the campaign speeches of President-Elect Donald Trump. But with debt piling up, Beijing must juggle ever-more furiously to maintain appearances. Photo: Getty

Every infrastructure in the world is funded by debt, aka bond, which are sold to public and investors. I can't believe such low standard journalism.

Was this video made by an internship of WSJ. I can’t believe that such a low quality report came from WSJ

Honestly as an American, I would love more infrastructure debt than military debt
  • And California nor any state cannot build a single High-Speed rail system, why?

infrastructural debt is GOOD. because it's a long term investment that will facilitate economic activity and growth. of course anything in China is a bad thing to a westerner's point of view.

Highways in China are not free, and it's actually have been one of the most stable investment in more than 30 years. Not very lucrative but safe.
  • Infrastructure debt is not a bad thing though. The US lacks a modern infrastructure because your debt is splurged on stupid shit.

WSJ did the best to find faults in the Chinese economy, have to give them an "A" for trying it.
  • "Traditionally, local governments tapped banks for funds..." I didn't realize this was a comedy video.

my country also have that kind of funding. I don't think it's bad. it helps the people as an alternative tool for investment.

What is wrong with paying people to build up infrastructure? Even if the money can not be recoup from the specific project, the overall area will be benefiting from it and can eventually used for economic activities. China does not have a bridge to nowhere. Due to its dense population, anywhere you go in China, there will be roads, bridges, trains, towns and cities connecting. So all infrastructure is not wasted. I personally think China's infrastructure is just the beginning. It will take another 50 years to pave all roads, including small town roads, with cement and there is nothing else to build. That is the case for Japan, where infrastructure investment no longer make sense because all roads are built. But for China, due its enormous size and its population, there are plenty of room of infrastructure to get invested and that make sense. As long as the country itself can sustain it, the more roads to build, the better. So far given the enormous amount of industrial output and the large amount of money in the hands of its citizens without much to invest in, infrastructure might be a good way to take in the money. IT IS JUST THE BEGINNING FOR INFRASTRUCTURE BUILD UP IN CHINA. Mark my word for it.

You forgot there is Africa, Africa is helping China to ship the extra surplus export product from China, and there is enough infrastructure in Africa to keep China and Chinese ppl. working for decades.China also becomes the expert of building infrastructure at the unbelievable speed of efficiency and at low cost to any 3 rd world country.
