Stolen cheques, the disappearance of $32K and its mysterious return for one TD customer

Gerry Wheaton says he’s still in shock over how someone was able to steal personal cheques from his office, forge his signature, and successfully cash them at a bank.

The TD customer says back in November 2023, he made an alarming discovery in his bank account when he realized a $31,870 cheque had been cashed along with a second one for $1,270.

Perhaps just as concerning, he says, is his bank's response and the handling of this entire ordeal— especially when most of the funds were returned to his account months later.

Consumer Matters reporter Anne Drewa has more.

  • The teller at national bank was definitely in on it. The written amount is for 1870 but the numbers amount is 31,870. That makes the cheque ineligible to be cashed. No one is dumb enough to make that mistake. The teller was working with the thief
  • Those cheques weren't cashed at TD. They have pretty strict policies they follow even if you bring a cheque in to deposit to your TD account. The onus is on those two banks that cashed them ESPECIALLY the one for 32K! No way that should have gotten through unless he had a shady inside connection and I bet someone got fired

Bank tellers, like any customer interacting employee are paid peanuts compared to 'managers' and executives.

He's funny! Says he in the process of leaving TD. Dude, all banks are like this. It's either banks or money under your bed. You just gotta keep on fighting.

I worked at a bank like 15 years ago and we used to check signatures then, someone screwed up big time or knew the criminals. The employees I've seen in there lately aren't very good or trained compared to how it used to be. Seems like they just want cheap labor now. I sound like an old man yelling at the clouds. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

That's why you never keep too much money in your chequing account. Keep larger amounts in a savings account and transfer into chequing when you've written a cheque.

You needed to report the stolen cheques, and immediately do stop payments on the fraud cheques, and close the chequeing account. Added protection is given to business accounts, so stop using a personal chequeung account to do business.
  • The problem is the mobile app. They allow thieves to cash cheques without checking the signature. It’s an industry wide problem not just at TD.

Ok. The reason he got his money back is that Canadian banking laws are strict. He was guaranteed to win any lawsuits related to this. It is disturbing that the bank hasn’t bothered verifying the signature at all.

BANKS ARE CROOKED. THEY GIVE YOU NO REASON TO TRUST THEM
  • @MelJandric
Banks make money regardless who cashes the cheque... why bother verifying signature...
  • @martinemjt
who could it be now? somebody borrowed, invested, made it s profit then returned the money??? could it be!
  • @althunder4269
Cheque clearance is automated and they don't look at writing styles or signatures. They don't really even look at the date.
  • @at6446
I did not have any cheques. Someone made a cheque in my name and withdrew all my money. It was TD bank.

In Canada there is no legal requirement for what a signature should be. Can be a smiley face, for all they care
