Yugi Muto was the King Of The Games for a reason, as not only was he a tactical genius, he held a special bond with his cards that allowed him to bring out the latent potential hiding in even the weakest of monsters.

This fact was even highlighted by Yugi’s use of Kuriboh, a monster so puny that most opponent’s laughed when he brought it to the field, but even when compared to his favorite furball, Yugi played a ton of terrible cards.

So today we’re looking at the ten worst cards in Yugi’s deck, how he managed to bring out their potential, and why duelists in the TCG have struggled to do the same.

If history has shown us anything, it’s that none of Yugi’s cards are so bad that Konami won’t try to market them.

You forgot one crucial data point here: “My grandpa’s deck has no pathetic cards, Kaiba!”

1:52 It’s ironic that in the anime Brain Control was a broken card yet it couldn’t work on Slifer yet in the real game it CAN work on Slifer yet it’s actually a weak card.

Early DM duels were closer to DND than an actual card game but at least we get moments like attack the moon
  • @DshRendar
Fun fact if you read the manga to explain the reason the cards have silly effects is because they’re playing specific rules made for duelist kingdom

As bad as it is, I always enjoy witnessing Dark Sage successfully got summoned via its effect in MD. It's so funny to see old man jumpscare lol

In Dark Side of dimensions Yugi uses a trap that lets him draw one card when he takes at least 2000 or more battle damage. Basically a Jar of Greed with a really bad condition.

It's astonishing how bad Konami is when it comes to errata; I can't count how often they changed cards to get them off the ban list only for them to end up being absolutely useless.

The Card of Sanctity nerf was insane. All they had to do was make it Quick Play, require it to be used at the beginning of your opponent's turn, and require that your opponent have an equal or less amount of cards than you in their hand. It still kind of ruins it's comeback potential, but at least the effect is INTACT.

This video made me realize that Kaiba, Yugi and Joey all had Normal Monster Animal Wielding Weaponry cards in their deck. Yugi had Battle Steer, Joey had Alligator Sword and Kaiba had Battle Ox.

Dark flare knight needs a retrain. One spellcaster and one Warrior type monster and it's contact fusion and give it a little protection and a good effect

Honorable Mention: Dark Magic Curtain Technically not Yugi's Card(it was Pandora/Arkana's), but he used the Effect of the card in the Duel and it was a pretty iconic moment for fans since that card marked the first official appearance of the beloved Dark Magician Girl....a card which CAN'T be summoned with the Real Life version for some reason

Dark Sage really confused me when I saw the TCG card because they translated Thousand Dragon requiring Time Wizard to the TCG by just making him a fusion monster. I don't get why they didn't do the same thing for Dark Sage by just making him a fusion as well.

Damn, that Brain Control tactic against Slifer was incredible. I totally forgot about that.
  • @Roboshi2007
duelist kingdom was half card game and half DnD, stuff like changing the tides with gravity spells you then deactivate is in line with a creative TTRPG session.
  • @neroneroren6788
The Shaggy thing is because in one part of the manga says that if you end a turn without monsters you automatically lose. So crashing Battle Steer wasn't an option.
  • @greatscornholio
the thing i like about dark sage is its effect special summons itself from the deck. such a bizarre interaction. cards on the field special summoning something else from the deck, sure. but you’d be activating time wizard, and then rummaging through your deck like “wait, i promise this will make sense once i find the card”

Time Seal could also be on a list of "Top 10 Terrible Trap Cards That Would Be Broken if they were Spells".
  • @Chucky_Martinez
Speaking of the Giant Soldier of Stone in the Mystical Moon discussion, that very scene would soon be made into a card called "Attack the Moon"
  • @xCorvus7x
It's a mistake to call Marshmallon's Glasses anti-synergistic with Marshmallon. The point of Marshmallon's glasses is not to activate them and then summon Marshmallon in attack position but to activate the Glasses on the next turn, after your opponent tried in vain to destroy your set Marshmallon by battle. That's also how the card was used in the manga.
