Video of the ongoing summit eruption at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Halemaumau vent inside of Kilauea volcanoes summit caldera.

It was extremely windy with gusts up to 40 mph so I had to use audio from a previous visit. It was doing the exact same thing with lava sloshing around inside the active vent at the edge of the growing lake.

Mauna Loa volcano is in the distance and has a dusting of snow on its summit.

There's some slight shaking as it was very challenging to keep the cameras still for any period of time.

The last clips with the double rainbow are from my GoPro 8. I used the original audio to give an idea of how windy it was.

I managed to get over one hour of usable footage and I then edited it down to this short video.

Yeah, I'm way behind in editing videos. More than 1 year.

I'm about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) from the erupting vent.

This vantage point is right where the trade showers creep in from the east (our backs) and end.
This means it can often be engulfed in a cloudy mist at any time of the day or night.
You're also near the edge of the collapse of the main caldera and its steaming cliffs.
In other words, there can be misty rains, clouds, and or steam present as seen in this visit.

I shot with both of my Panasonic cameras.
The GH5 with the Leica 100-400mm (200-800mm 35mm equivalent) for all of the close-up clips and the G9 with the Lumix 8-18mm (16-36mm 35mm equivalent) or the 12-35mm (24-70mm equivalent) for all of the wide ones.
It was extremely quiet with only low rumbling and the occasional sloshing on the spattering vent.

The churning pond in the vent echoes off of the caldera walls.

No one knows how long this will last or if it will erupt in other locations. For now, it's confined within the caldera. The lava lake continues to rise.

The eruption stopped and then restarted and continues to this date.
I'll have more videos coming soon.

The audio is subtle as it's generally quiet out there. I had to use audio from a previous outing due to the strong winds. Gust up to 40 mph. The last 10 seconds or so have the original audio to give you an idea of what it was like. As of today 2-4-23 the lava lake has risen over 200' after a pause in the eruption and it started up again in early Jan 2023.
  • I was just watching the movie volcano last night ( yes the one with Tommy Lee Jones)
