Today, I'm repotting my Laelia rubescens orchid. This video is packed with tips while working with orchids, carefully misting roots, and methodically removing wires and mounts. Let's dive into this exciting process of transitioning my wish list orchid into her new home!
Key Highlights:
Preparing the Orchid:
Started with active root growth.
Careful removal from the mount to minimize damage.
Choosing the Right Setup:
Using a semi-hydroponic setup with lava rock.
Tailored layering for optimal water absorption during active growth and dryness during the winter.
Potting Process:
Gradual addition of lava rock to avoid damaging root tips.
Ensuring stable placement with the right amount of support.
Caring Tips:
Regular flushing to maintain hydration.
Placement for optimal sunlight exposure without burning the leaves.
Managing long bloom spikes to prevent accidental damage.

What an interesting orchid. Thank you for introducing me to her
  • 🦒👋🥰 Well, that was easy. I would expect the roots would be more attached to the mount but in the end they seemed happy to get rid of that wood and the chunk of coconut fibers. Cute how new roots are branching, poking out of the older one. Great job 😘😘😘😘😘

Nice to know I'm not the only one holding my breath. 💖🌞🌵😷

Laelia rubescens, "the rose tinted laelia"...I LOVE that ❤❤❤

Loved the heart beat background. Very clever. Just watched "Hi, It's me" from 3 years ago. Pleased to match a face with a voice. Thanks to you, I am becoming an avid grower. (Love the nutrient vids.) Keep up the great work.

Change of tactics should work well in taming your orchid Nina.

The beginning part reminded me of an operation. 👩‍⚕️🩺 In February, I got my first two mounted orchids, the Gastrochilus japonicus and the Bulbophyllum barbigerum. For the Bulbophyllum, I accidently cut it off the mount while trimming the roots. After repotting it like the setup in this video with the lava rock, the main bulb rotted so I was left with an empty cork mount. I'm now thinking about buying a mini phal to mount to it as a first time project. The Gastrochilus japonicus grows monopodially like a phal and it has very interesting flowers.

.....your channel has always been so full of great information, but the creative editing is icing on the cake.....it seemed that the good roots were above the rusty wire and none below....love the Laelia Kautskyana....such a beauty!
  • Laelia rubescens is not a vigorous root grower and it is honestly amazing how small the root system can be, even on a large, well-grown plant. A lot of people struggle with it in cultivation and I think you would have been better leaving it on the mount but I understand there are only so many mounts you can handle.

Hi, I am new to your channel but am binge watching today and I love your content! I can't thank you enough for the valuable information that you provide!

Enjoyed watching you repot this Laelia. Interesting use of the different sizes of lava rock. (I'm learning from you how to use the different sizes.) I did a bit of research on this orchid and learned that it is referred to as the "Flor de Jesus" in Guatemala. Interesting, isn't it? The flowers shown on websites is just gorgeous. Hmmmm? Should I look for one for my collection? Can you believe that my dendrobium 'dearei" is in spike? What a nice surprise when I was in the orchid garden yesterday. I've been growing it for about 4 years and this is the first time that it is rewarding me with blooms. So exciting! I have it in organic medium and will probably repot it in a larger pot with organic medium after flowering. It is a very tall plant. Never disappointed with the videos you produce. Keep them coming. Take care and enjoy life!
  • Most of my small to med size chids are in tree fern with maybe some charcoal or bark, depending on the type of plant it is. I know Todd adds oyster shell to a lot of his and has had really good success. 🙂 I've never liked using wire as I've heard that the rust can be harmful to some orchids, I have used coated wire or a non rusting wire, but almost all my mounts are held in place with rubber coated elastic cording and love it. So easy to tie on and as plant grows it expands with it. 😅 I get my cording from Tarzane orchids in Florida. I order from them often. 😊 Hope your having a peaceful weekend Nina.. catch ya later.... 🦜
  • Ahem 🎙️ “I can hear your heartbeat” 💓 😂 I just took a coelogene cristata and a restrepia off mounts that look like that one. They just weren’t doing well on a bit of wood. They need more moisture than I can give it. Picky little things, aren’t they?
  • @gcarson
Repotting with a new growth is so nerve wracking 😅
  • Thanks for another great video Nona. Why did you initially put the orchid on the mount? I thought the mount would dry out too quickly with those fine roots?
