Almost three million people currently identify as Native American — despite this, their place in both our history, and the modern day, is largely ignored.

For a century, the U.S government believed what was best for Native American kids was to strip them of their families and communities, their culture and language, their hair and clothes. Now, mounting research has demonstrated how this policy has decimated communities and been deadly to Native peoples. “Identification with a particular cultural background and a secure sense of cultural identity is associated with higher self-esteem, better educational attainment (grades and going to college), and is protective against mental health problems, substance use, and other issues for adolescents and adults,” a summary of research by the National Indian Child Welfare Association stated in 2017.

For 24 year old Delmar, learning about traditional practices is a way to honor her heritage and make sense of her place in the world.

It kinda makes me sad that this isn't ingrained into American culture, I feel like it should be. Kinda like how New Zealand embraces the culture of their indigenous people, it's kinda irritating that we have been doing the near opposite and making people do these traditions in the background, so no one knows about it.

it breaks my heart how our people have been raped, it caused so many natives (including myself) culture to be diluted. i wish we can all connect
  • As an Irish girl who has lost most of her heritage due to “culture cleansing” this is a really beautiful thing to see. Thank you for sharing your traditions with us! 💛

as an indigenous girl i love seeing this stuff. (i'm from canada, assiniboine, cree, and nakota)i feel as if nobody really talks about aboriginal youth and aboriginal women. i love and appreciate this video and the young people in it. i too, abused alcohol and been through a lot, same goes for the rest of my family. it's very heartfelt and inspiring to see them healing. my people are suffering a lot but we can heal, and we must heal. very beautiful traditional outfit btw.💗

As a native american (Apache) we need to keep each and every one (tribes)of our culture and languages alive,I'm proud to be native💙

As an African American female, I didn’t expect his to be relatable AT ALL. Their ancestral culture and heritage was ripped and stolen from them and were forced to adopt and assimilate with the white Americans just like my African ancestors. So weird.
  • It absolutely breaks my heart to see such a beautiful culture being destroyed. These people are true Americans and we need to give them all of our respect.
  • I thank these lovely native women for allowing us a glimpse into their culture and traditions. It is a privilege to learn from them, for them to open up and be proud of their heritage that this country has tried so hard to strip away from them since the white settlers first arrived. I honor your beauty and strength, I hold such deep respect for you and your people. There are so many truths that the native community hold but modern society has told us is not true and created such a disconnect from human and nature.

Lots of indigenous people have been slaughtered. I hope that the indigenous people of the Americas will get a better life in the future.
