Lynyrd Skynyrd performed at Ryman Auditorium in 2022, featuring a crazy list of songs, and lots of guest performers. This is the final concert to ever be recorded and filmed with Gary Rossington. This is Gary's final time ever performing Free Bird, which was confirmed by Johnny Van Zant after the fact, which is insane. I miss Gary with everything in me, and I still cannot believe he's gone. I'll forever be grateful that he and the rest of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote so many great songs, and we get to live with them forever. #lynyrdskynyrd #music #fyp

Who else got goosebumps right at the beginning, knowing that this was his final time to play these wonderful chords that will go down forever in musical history?!

I'm a 64 year old black American woman. I've found it hard to let myself grieve over a profound loss. When I heard this song a few days ago, the tears started flowing. Now I listen to this song as part of my healing. It's something about it that touches me deeply.

My husband loved Gary Rossington. He passed away last week and I can’t imagine a more fitting song. He was a light man and a Paveman. I’ll always love him 43 yrs. But now he is a free bird now too.

On October 21, 1977, the day after the plane crash, let me tell you there wasn't a dry eye in my entire high school and nobody spoke all day. Complete silence. Everyone was in shock. Teachers, jocks, heads, nerds, everybody. I remember it like it was yesterday, sadly. Johnny, I have the utmost admiration for you. You carried your brother's legacy and have done a helluva job! True American!!!!!!!

I’ve been hearing Free Bird for literal decades and this is still the only song that I will never cut off halfway thru. If it’s on the car radio when I get to my destination I will literally sit in the car until it ends. Thank you Lynyrd Skynyrd for making my existence on this rock a little less shitty 15 minutes at a time.

Gary was a family friend. He was always so kind and friendly to us. Much more quiet than you’d expect however he had a presence. No ego whatsoever, just an awesome guy. R.I.P.

I'm drunk & really wishing my sister Angie could be with me today. She died 1-1-98 at 35 & I'm crying and listening to our favorite song. I miss you so much Angie. WHY am I still here & you aren't?😢

Didn't realize at the time but lookin back seeing Ronnie, Allen ,Gary and Ed do this in early 70s from 5 feet away is a gift and a memory to cherish... they were sooo good.

Had this played while my dad was cremated. Breaks my heart everytime.
  • I had “Free Bird” playing for my brother’s final song at his funeral. He had a hard life as a Vietnam vet & died in a tragic way. A few weeks after his funeral he visited me in a dream. Being worried about him, I asked if he was ok & if he needed anything. His reply, “I must be traveling along now…there’s too many places I gotta see…”🕊️

Had tears in my eyes watching this... Rest easy, Gary Rossington. You are forever missed.. as are the rest of the members that have passed away. Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd!

I was there that night. There were technical difficulties with Gary’s guitar. Gary walked off the stage and the band kept going for awhile, but Johnny decided to stop the song, saying that there was no way he was doing it without Gary, especially since the show was being filmed. Knowing what we know now, I’m glad I got to see 1 1/2 Free Birds during Gary’s final show. RIP Gary. A true legend!!!

I've always loved this song and now it's closer to my heart than ever before. I just lost my only 2 sons on 1/24/24 (Sean, 36) & 2/2/24 (Scott, 38). They both lived with serious heart conditions, the oldest was awaiting heart surgery that was never to be. I was brought to tears especially when all eyes turned to the screen and images of Ronnie singing filled it. It made me miss my boys even more. We had just buried them on 3/2/24. My oldest loved southern rock and country music, my youngest enjoyed all kinds of music. My son's you're as "Free as a bird now", I'll see you in time again some day. Love, mom.

To be a teen in the 70's was absolutely awesome!
  • Billy Powell was one of the best piano players in rock n roll. Without a doubt. RIP
