1978 Fiberform 24 Restoration (Herbert) Part 1

Published 2016-07-22
In preparation for our trip down the Mississippi, we tore down and rebuilt Herbert, a 1978 Fiberform 24' boat. It was no small job and it took a group of us to get it done on time, but was well worth the effort.

I love it! Spent 3 yrs when I had time restoring my 74 Sea Ray 24ft Sundowner hardtop. Very similar but transom was good & kept 351 Mercruiser.

I take back half of the stuff I am gonna say about you later.  I woulda cheaped out on the interior furniture and the cabin sole ( floor).  But you did the whole enchilada..  The re-engine was inspired.  You spent some serious money on this thing.. which makes me think you have plans beyond one trip down the missisippi.   Thumbs up for good hard work, good vision, and being smart enough to hire out the parts where needed !

Back in the late 70's in the original Blue Water Marina on 34th street in Ocean City, NJ there used to be a few of these up on blocks for sale. My friend, Greg Ricci, and I would take a few cans of soda inside and act like we were cool at night. Such great times as a kid in a marina environment. I miss my old friend and wonder if he remembers any of those good-to-be-a-kid times.

Not sure if my dad's Fiber Form was a 78 but likely very close. She was deep orange across the front of flybridge...although my dad had 4 different boats the FF truly was my favorite :) Nice work guys.....she looks amazing!!!! :)

I had a 21 foot Cuddy cabin years ago that had a V6 MerCruiser in it. I understand because of the weight of the motor it was just as fast as a V-8 would’ve been

I was just looking at a 1974 Fiberform 28 Flybridge. Really cheap! How bad could it be? Your video just saved me a ton of money and frustration and about 6,000 "I told you so's" from my wife! Thanks!

Great Vid! Do you know if the hull was chopped fiberglass or hand laid?

Such a long tour with five people on a boat only 7.20m long, ... that is very brave and requires the ability to suffer and self-discipline! Have there been no tensions? Was your trip a psychological experiment or a kind of therapy? Next question: why didn't you replace your gas-guzzling petrol engine with a reliable, economic Mercedes or Perkins marine diesel engine?
  • how many gallons per hour do you think its going to get? I had an idea similar to this but using a 4 stroke outboard.
