I don’t really have a certain routine in memorizing scripture except for writing the first letter of every word that I have memorized. So far (I’m 16), I have Mark 1-3, Philemon, 1 John 1-3:14, 2 John, 3rd John, and Jude memorized. Repetition is very important. So is praying to have the capacity to memorize and to use what you have memorized to glorify God. Remember it’s not about you, it’s about God.

I was praying yesterday about trying to memorize scripture. This is an answer to prayer. Thank you!
  • Jesus Helps me Remember Everything I am supposed to..And Forget all the useless doctrines of men. Jesus Promises to Give us Everything we Need and Deliver us from evil..And He Does exactly that.
  • I'm 20 years old and some time in this life i hope to memorize the entire gospel of John. I have already memorized the first 18 Verses. And even if I don't reach that goal in this life, then John can help me with the rest in heaven 😉

There is something special about knowing God's Word by Heart

My Associate Pastor, Andy Lackey, memorized the ENTIRE Book of Ephesians and recited it as a sermon one Sunday...the congregation had no inkling that he was going to do that. Andy spoke to the people in the balcony as though they were Gentiles and to the people on the main floor as though they were Jews. One by one, each of us in the audience that day began to realize that Andy wasn't looking at any notes. It was one of the most mesmerizing sermons I have ever heard. Andy Lackey has also written a book entitled, "Owning Scripture - The Art of Bible Memorization". I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to be better at memorizing the Bible. It's available on Amazon for only $5. Diane in NC.
  • Hi everyone! Could y'all please pray that I'll overcome the lies of the devil? Lately, he's been working real hard against me. He's putting doubts that God doesn't exist, and it's overwhelming me! Please pray that I'll get closer with God and to trust in him, thank y'all so much!! God bless ya'll!! 💕😊🙌🏻

all the people who already memorized romans 8 in the chat be like
    been there, done that.
haha jk. All glory to God. it took me months!!!!! did it on and off, one verse per week, and then it got easier!
Memorize when you're waiting for the bus, memorize when you're jogging. Scripture comes alive, really
  • I believe if you have a good or great memory it won’t be a struggle to retain ANYTHING. Unlike someone who hardly retain anything like me “sad but true”. Please pray for me that God will miraculously give me a great memory to retain his word and share my faith boldly and eloquently. Thank you.

Tony, I just read the text on Bible memorization. Well I have a bad memory generally so to read what you and others are doing is very encouraging. We need to s-t-r-e-t-c-h our faith in many different ways. Thank you so much also for introducing Pastor John's teachings and your lovely style with audio media. I am blessed to be one of "those great crowd of witnesses" waiting for and heralding Jesus' soon return. Robert Mulgrew, in Maynooth, Ireland. Shalom

Very interesting ideas about how to memorise Scripture.
On a different but related point, I think it is very helpful to try to remember what book and chapter biblical passages are in, but I think it is not really worthwhile trying to remember exactly where divisions between verses take place.
If we know what chapter a passage is in, that means we can find it in a few seconds to look at it more closely. But trying to remember where exactly verse divisions are takes a lot of effort and doesn't really help us very much.

Im memorising 1 peters right now. My technique is different though cuz i can memorise more than one verse a day, usually. But these tips are awesome. I'll try the emphasis thingie later.

Dear Pastor John Piper. Can you please recommend a good read on the cross of our Lord Jesus. I read the books by A.W.Pink, John Stott and J.C Ryle. I'd like to read your favorite one, probably Jonathan Edwards? Please suggest/advise. Thank you so much!
