New Horizons Critique | Animal Crossing Analysis – Rero

Ever since the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I've heard not much besides praise for the game. It's charming and beautiful for sure, but the many issues the game has aren't talked about very much, even after four months since its release date. Today, I give you the reasons why I think this game struggles in a lot of areas, whether they be entirely new issues, or perhaps things that made the past games great that were either tarnished or entirely removed in this installment.

Special thanks to M4m4 for helping me out with the multiplayer footage! Check out his channel here:    / @m4m4.

CORRECTION: During my golden tools section, I brought up the fact that you got the golden shovel for completing the fossils in New Leaf, and compared it to New Horizons where you get nothing. This was false. You always got nothing for fossil completion in every Animal Crossing. In New Leaf, you actually receive the golden shovel from Leif. I was a bit overly-confident in terms of the information I gave out about the series, I guess. Perhaps I should've just double-checked. At least I learned my lesson. I'll re-word my complaint by saying that New Horizons could have very well added a reward for something that's felt so empty and pointless for the entire series. The point of sequels is to address issues from previous installments. Sure, you could argue that, "it's always been this way." But does it really have to remain as such? Albeit, this was a smaller, more nitpick-y section looking back, but yeah. Just thought I'd address this.

Its funny that the main purpose of the golden axe in previous titles was that it couldnt break

Doing such high quality videos for a neglegable amount of views and 77 subscribers... You're an underrated legend my dude
  • Rero: "They shouldn't be slowly trickling out these old features" Nintendo: "Okay, we won't!"

I loved this analysis! As much as I love NH, I miss a lot of the charm that NL had. In particular, I miss having lots of NPCs.

I'm not a huge Animal Crossing fan myself, but I must say, you certainly seemed to know what you were talking about. I'm glad someone's actually taking a good look at this game and revealing it's not perfect. Excellent video.
  • And here we are ten months later and it's still a pretty yet absolutely vapid abyss of nothingness
  • Great stuff! Although I do feel slightly opposed to the whole "Player Choice" argument. I fully agree that the game at times restricts you for making choices for no good reason (like lowering your island rating when you fulfil a stylistic choice). I just don't think the whole flower argument makes a ton of sense; it's too specific a case. Nintendo most likely wasn't sitting at HQ going "mwahaha, we'll make flowers automatically watered when it rains to screw up anyone with dirt paths! That'll show 'em!" Nonetheless, I really like this critique. Captured my opinion as a whole.

great video, i thought the same thing. so glad you mentioned the music and mentioned new leaf so much, i love my new leaf town too. and my new leaf town is just like yours! i too filled it to the brim with flowers and paths. i would spend summer afternoons just putting down patterns and once i filled it completely with flowers i was very proud, im sure you felt like that too. anyways really good content i cant believe you dont even have 100 subs, you deserve so many more!

Overgrowing flowers is the bane of my existence. I ran out of slots for designs, so I couldn't do the invisible path trick even if I wanted to.

Nintendo is a strange company. They are so anal about how people “enjoy” their games. I remember like a few weeks after the game was released Nintendo wasn’t happy with how much interest players got from their money in the bank so they updated the amount of interest players receive by a lot. I’m not sure why that got the devs upset, but they just had to gimp the interest payouts because Nintendo gotta Nintendo.
  • tbh your music judgements are fair. I havent played NL or WW fr years and still have the tunes in my head but despite having played NH for a good 100+ hours and trying to listen to the ost...I usually find myself looking for the other ones. Not to mention how weird the mixing in? The music is low, so I turn it up, just to be blasted by the "discovery" sounds. idk if that bothered anyone else, but I hate the mixing in this game...

One of the things I will say about the soundtrack is that, on top of not being a fan of the synth sounds they use, I really don't like how EVERY song uses the game's motif. In New Leaf, only half the songs had the motif (and even then 12AM was very creative with it), leaving the other half to have completely different expressions and themes. For those who don't know what a motif is, it's a recurring melody. In this case, it's parts of the title theme of each AC game that show up as part of the rest of the soundtrack.

You have Hamlet in both New Leaf and New Horizons? That’s so cool, he’s my favourite villager. Great work on the video, I always felt like New Horizons was lacking in some aspects compared to the older games. I decided to sub, keep up the good work!

I felt like a nag when I had to constantly ask my friend for a cutting board. Many oversights in this game.
  • @KennyKowalski
This is really well put together. Even if a few comments (a negligible amount, really) aren't as relevant in the wake of the November 2021 update, you still bring up a lot of valid points. Especially the thing about the music--NH's soundtrack has always bothered me because of how lacking it feels. Earned a new subscriber with this one :)

Is Chief one of your villagers? He’s my fave cranky! Tbh, Animal Crossing is a good game period…that’s why it’s so acclaimed, but it’s like if you’ve played other entries in the series you should see clear issues with ACNH. That’s why I’m still playing New Leaf. AC is a very fun concept that clearly works, and ACNH is the first AC game a lot of people have played too so they don’t know any better.
  • bruh, you just came outta no where and forced me to sub. Seriously though keep up the good work, loving the chill vibe
  • @geonichols
Awesome video! Honestly, I’m not the biggest animal crossing fan but I was still very entertained with what you had to say the whole way through. Anyway, good job 👍

Great video! I agree. The ACNH soundtrack is pretty good (unless for 3AM that I CANNOT STAND) but in my opinion, it lacks the childish and playful aspect of the previous soundracks that made them so lovely and unique.
