Thanks Bryan for this long awaited, and excellent review of the Yakima EXO Swingbase and Cargo Box. Thanks also for the helpful advice you continue to provide me and the Tesla car camping community.
  • @thelastfedor
Great video. I love this setup. The minimal range loss is the biggest selling point to me. Thanks Brian!
  • @goldviper5280
Bryan, YOU Sir are the man. I have been waiting for this video to get posted. Thanks you so much. I really like the functionality of this system. Today is Friday Feb 24 2023 and I pick up my NEW MYP on Monday.
  • @jacobheinz8236
Fantastic setup. Easier access than roof racks , bonus much less range loss. Love it.
  • @asong0123
very nice and detailed installation video. thank you! Hopefully, one day, i could try this kind of cool setup.
  • Well, shit... I think this is my ideal setup. Time to buy a Model Y and this carrier. Perfect!
  • @DeltaDreams
Great video Bryan. I got the Model Y recently inspired by your camping videos
  • I plan on doing exactly what you are doing. I was looking for an alternative for the roof rack bc of the noise, range loss, & constant worry of something being on top of the car. I have a 22’ Model Y Performance. I love your videos! Thanks for taking the time to create them
  • Great video, Bryan! I already had an EXO swing base I bought for my Bronco Sport and haven't hooked it up to my Model Y yet. Appreciate the tips on flipping the threaded piece inside the swing base and buying a battery-powered right angle ratchet. Those will save me a lot of time. It's nice that the license plate placement is high enough on the Model Y that Yakima's optional plate and light kit isn't necessary. I've had very good experiences with this hitch mounted box and always thought it would be a good fit for the type of trips you do, so I'm glad it seems to be working well for you.
  • Just wanted to add a note that I attempted a similar install using the Milwaukee M12 ratchet and wasn't thrilled with the performance. It didn't feel like it was getting the bolt very tight, although there wasn't much slop left in the swingbase. I did see the m12 ratchet was only rated to do 35 ft lbs, where yakima recommends 100Nm of torque, or around 73 ft lbs, double that of the M12 ratchets rating. I ended up using a normal 3/8" drive ratchet and it seemed to work fine. I did use a torque wrench to get it up to 73 ft lbs and it had a lot of room to go from what the M12 could do. In the end I returned the M12 ratchet and will just use a combination of 3/8" breaker bar, ratchet, and torque wrench as needed.

Great tip for getting that screwed on vs manually wrenching it! Awesome swing out box and makes a great table! I need a bigger battery so I can bring an air fryer with me =p Great vid man!
  • @kupua
I use a ryobi and works like a champ! Btw I’ve also added another nut to screw on so u don’t have to make so many turned on the bolt!
  • Thanks for the review. For all the driving you do it’s probably worth having it over the rooftop one just to get that range back. 5% loss isn’t too bad at all.
  • Super video. When I went to buy this exact set up for my MY, the dealer showed me why they could not install EXO accessories. They were trying to put bolt in from the left saying this was design flaw of Tesla hitch. Morons! Guess they didn't want the sale that bad.
  • @MechayaAlta
Great video as usual. If you’re considering going back to a roof box, take a look at the Inno wedge and wedge plus. They are a bit smaller than Yakima/Thule boxes, but are better made (in Japan)and more aerodynamic. I believe REI can get them as well.
