In this episode Zeinab Badawi focuses on the fall of the kingdom of Aksum and how the Christian kings who followed in the wake of its demise left powerful legacies especially that of King Lalibela who ruled in the 12/13th century. He is credited with building a complex of rock hewn churches which represent amazing feats of engineering at that time.

Zeinab also charts the arrival of Islam in this part of Africa and how the Christian kings and Muslim emirs co-existed. And she visits Harar, the most holy of Ethiopia’s cities for Muslims, where she observes the bizarre long-standing tradition of the ‘hyena men’ of Harar who feed these wild animals by hand.

In my European home country, Africa is only mentioned in history class when referencing Ancient Egypt or colonialism. I never knew about the civilisations of Kush or Aksum until now. Thank you so much for this wonderful series! Love from the Netherlands

Dear Zeinab as a proud Ethiopian with our culture and history, I would like to thank you very much for considering Ethiopia and Eretria in this edition. I believe through this series Africans shall develop a sense of respect and integrity for ourselves. This will create a strong public to public ties through understanding our shared history and tradition. In this series, you had tried to tell us a little about the Abyssinian middle ages. I believe your memories from the tour across Ethiopia and Eretria will be long-lasting. I had started subscribing to this channel and looking forward to seeing from all around Africa. Magnificent work!

I'm literally as old as civilization. Im still craying those ancestor genes inside of me. Half Somali, half Yemenis. Born and grow up in Saudi Now living in Canada. I love Ethiopians, Eritreans, and rest of horn of Africa #unitedwewin

Brilliant. No sensationalization of events to match with the usual narrative as we often see. In Ethiopia and in Eritrea different religion followers live side by side and there are intermarriages between them. The current Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali was born to a Muslim father and to a Christian mother. He followed the religion of his mother. Ethiopia and Eritrea set an example to the rest of the world.

Greetings from Russia! Thank you for this amazing line of videos about Africa, I greatly enjoy this excursion into the history and modern society of the completely foreign and unknown land. Great delivery and narration, amazing sights, interesting interviews - I am totally charmed.
  • When I saw Ziena on BBC I thought that she was an Ethiopian. To remind how we look alike in the horn of Africa. Now you Ziena is looking backward and linking the Historical traces to interpret how the Ethiopoans, Eritreans, Sudanese, Somalis and others around were living together . Politicians need to understand this for a coexistance and dreaming a United East African nations.Thank you Ziena Bedawi
  • I am loving this series. It’s keeping my brain engaged during lockdown. I’d love a second series covering it in more depth. As massive task given the rich history of Africa

There is also another mosque in Zeila (now part of North-Western Somalia), which dates to the 7th century AD and has two Mihrab's one facing Jerusalem another facing Mecca, and it's claimed to be built also by Muhammad's companions after they sought refuge in Aksum.
