The lamp is touch activated by monitoring the electric current running through it. Whenever I turn the ball on, an electric field is created in the nearby vicinity that the sensor can detect. And when I touch the ball, the air is no longer ionized because the charges are flowing through me instead of the air. That delicate change is enough to upset the electric current on the lamp and therefore activate the sensor. In simple terms, lamp turn on when air go zap
