Meet the 99th Pursuit Squadron, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, a vital component of the Air Force during the war. Masters of the Air is now streaming. apple.co/_MastersOfTheAir

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, Masters of the Air follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.

Hailing from Apple Studios, Masters of the Air is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

This whole show feels like I wanted an entire slice of cheesecake, but they only brought 2 or 3 bites and some of the crust to my table. I feel like they burned through too many episodes with side stories and drama, then realized “oh sh** we’re 7 episodes through a 10 episode series? Quick, do something!”

They should have cut Crosby being over worked and the Westgate subplot and put more scenes of the Tuskeegee.

I am very grateful they made the miniseries and appreciate the amount of funding it required. I just can’t help but wonder if they could have got to ten episodes if they had removed some story arcs which didn’t seem to help the show move along. My best example is the Crosby/ Sandra scenes and maybe cutting down the Stalag scenes. In my opinion, they should have written the episodes similar to The Pacific and focused on three airmen from not just the 100th Bomb Group but different bomber, fighter, and reconnaissance groups/squadrons from the Eighth Air Force.

This series is more grounded in terms of what it was like being a pilot in ww2...everyone wants all these fantastic battles but its very clear to me the show is looking at the less glamorous sides of the war.

Tom Hanks, u've done it again! Love this series .. more stories of service & sacrifice

Change the name of the show to “Masters of the POW Camp” pls

This episode was such a letdown. Finally got to see the 99th in the show, only to have them just mention what they did. Guess they ran out of budget or just assume people have watched Tuskeegee Airmen (an old HBO movie) or Red Tails.

unlike BOB or The Pacific, the side-stories in this series were too distracting. Guessing a lot of the focus on the 100th ended up on the cutting room floor. Enjoyed the movie about the Tuskegee airmen better than their inclusion in this series (Red Tail Angels and the 3 part docuseries were my fave). It was a forced story, perhaps because they didn't support the 100th or the 8th air force. DEI strikes again, thx Apple.

I felt so sad after this episode, really expected some action :/ huge disappointment

I am slightly dissapointed with this show. Episodes are just to short compared to BoB and TP and they just wasted to many time on unnecessary scenes. I just wish there was more combat scenes.
  • Way to put these heroes all over your marketing and the intro, only to have them briefly show up in the 2nd to the last episode! Thanks show!🙄

Cheap Top Gun (1986) cockpit shots releasing bombs at 50 feet, not getting ripped to shreds, somehow big flashy michael bay gasloine explosions flying away and pronouncing the exact damage on your 6 oclock, somehow great summary of the overall problems with this show

MotA deteriorated in its second half, starting with EP 6. I don't mind the inclusion of side-stories, but imo they are poorly executed, and some of which do not contribute to the overall story as a whole, such as the Crosby/Sandra arc, wasting a lot of screen time. Too many missed opportunities, too many rushed scenes, and the big jump gaps between the timelines, I believe is the reason why the production couldn't fit such a story into a nine-episode miniseries. With the introduction of the Tuskegee airmen now, it also feels rushed, and sadly enough, they were reserved for the end of the show, showing barely any action with them...

P-40s sounding like Merlin P-51s? Not very accurate...
  • @jacksaloman9513
I have Band Of Brothers and The Pacific on Blu Ray and I am proud to say I will not have this poorly produced crud anywhere near my house. What injustice you have done for the Tuskegee Airmen.
