Amtrak’s California Zephyr

Published 2024-05-01
One of the longest rail journeys in the country and one of the most scenic in the world, Amtrak’s California Zephyr crosses from Chicago to the Bay Area. Traveling by train is a personal favorite of mine, so I thought I’d make my offering to cover this beautiful route from end to end.

(Filmed over the course of three trips in July 2023, August 2023, and March 2024)

Loved the history, thank you for sharing. I took the same route in March 2022. I loved every minute. I had snow as well in the Rockies. I’m set to ride the Empire Builder next month.

The Pioneer and the Desert Wind would be such popular routes nowadays, it's a real shame that they don't still run.

I'm going to be doing this next October! But I'll be doing it backwards, from Emeryville to Chicago. I can't wait!

Great info! Planning to do this with my teen kids next year for my 50th birthday. Curious about what time did you leave Chicago to see all these beautiful scenic routes on daytime. TIA!
  • My son and I will be taking this in July. Cannot wait for this bucket-list trip!
  • Thanks for sharing. Very informative and delivered in a nice, smooth and calm voice. My wife and I are planning to take this train in September as a retirement trip.

I've seen many Zephyr videos now but I liked this approach of summarizing the journey as it happens, making it feel like a travelogue rather than a description of the train itself.
  • Thanks for the informative video! I am considering taking it from Denver to Salt Lake City. Sonce it will arrive SLC at midnight, in your trip, what time did the train arrive SLC, and did you see many people talking off there?
  • Great video man, question for you I'm going in January is there a side that is better I have read that if your leaving chicago you want to have a roomette on the left?..thanks

So you should have a camera too if taking pictures 😂❤??
  • What was your favorite meal on this train? How many hours of uninterrupted sleep did you get on this train? Also you slept on the bottom bunk I assume, is that correct?
