The Nine Year Old King Who Replaced Henry VIII | Edward VI: Boy King | Chronicle

Published 2022-02-19
Often remembered as the "Forgotten Tudor King", Edward was just nine his father, King Henry VIII died and the young boy became King. Surrounded by advisors, he became further distanced from his beloved elder sister Mary. But by now they were divided not just by power and status, but also by faith. Mary was a staunch Catholic, Edward a reforming Protestant and the first Protestant King. In the Tudor world, such matters were not an issue of personal choice but matters of life or death, treason or heresy.

Documentary starts, David Starkey's voice recognised... Yep, this is definitely worth watching!
  • This poor boy. Used and manipulated by everyone. And his father not around to protect him. Sad.

Love the grounded reality of your channel ❤️❣️😁😁

Wow unlikely if Henry lived longer to see that was the bastard destitute Elizabeth 1 the one who brought the Gloriana Golden age to Uk .., not Edward his long time waited heir !! The Irony of life !! Thanks Mr Starkey for the video , always enjoyable 😊😊

Judging by some of the comments, there seems to a plethora of people who are mad about people making comments about the documentary w/o going through the bother of ACTUALLY reading any book about the topic in question. In my experience, a lot of people aren't able to carve out the time to read a weighty tome like a biography of this caliber. So the more knowledgeable commenters should stop getting their pantaloons in a bunch and instead appreciate the fact that people are actually choosing to learn about a historical person. It's hard to get a person's attention on a topic such as this for any longer than five minutes, so stop with the nitpicking already.

Woe to you, o land, that has a youth for a king!
  • Aweh ...Poor kiddo, I'm sure he kicked ass while he ruled though... a lot to take in for a child

I wonder whatever happened to old Barnaby Fitzpatrick?

Has it ever been considered that Edward was possibly on the spectrum? Having two siblings with ASD, I can say they exhibit many of the same mannerisms highlighted here which can be perceived as cold or aloof. Not taking away from the brutal and unusual circumstances of Edward, just a connection I couldn't help but make given the stark and emotionally bereft styles of writing presented here.

I could have sworn I heard this documentary already. Maybe it was from your sister channel?

I always think more of these royal babies would have survived if they’d been nursed by their real mothers. When being nursed by Wet nurses they get no colostrum.
  • edward, for being so young, may not have really and truly understood what was going on as far as his coronation that day and that was why he recorded so little in his journal of what was happening. it may have been because he wasn't told that much or didn't understand what all he was told when he was told anything about what was going on at the time

Oh how I rooted for Edward! What an England he would have made

Child throws a tantrum over being treated like a child. Classic.

It's all your fault, Dr. Starkey, for making me an utter UK history NERD nearly 20 years ago. (Thanks to TVO - public broadcasting, Ontario, Canada). I'm not exaggerating when I'd say I've seen this episode (and entire series) at least a dozen times I do Not agree with any of your politics - but you're absolutely the OG bard in my opinion.

Eddie's head looked like a 2 pound loaf of bread balanced on a pencil.

Yeah,so much better to hear someone probably more educated and knowledgeable(and English!) then some American discussing my predecessors! Except that Edward was NEVER physically disciplined,he had a 'whipping boy'-Barnaby for that.
