Hi friends, happy Thursday!

In 1972, an article went viral before the internet existed. The headline read: “Syphilis Victims in U.S. Study Went Untreated for 40 Years.” This bombshell report exposed the Tuskegee Experiment for what it was: a crime against humanity. Today, Bailey tells the story of the study’s 400 participants and the monsters who lied and took advantage of them even though a cure to their illness was readily available.

I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.

You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my Youtube for the visual side of things.

Wicked Clothes should sell a beach wrap that says “Government Coverup.”
  • I'm into Bailey just lounging on the couch telling me scary stories about our government. Really feels like in just chilling with my friend

One of my former students shared a Dark History story on her social media and wrote: My history teacher [me] used to tell us history was so much worse than she could tell us. Thank you, Bailey for telling the parts we can't and some teachers ignore.

This still happens today. In med school in most states, students are taught that black people's liver reacts differently and they have a higher tolerance, leading to more black people deaths in medicine. The US government needs to be held accountable as with the Nuremberg trials for the German Nazis (American Nazis were never held accountable). The idea of America is great, but we have a long way to go and a lot of work. I hope with more of this coming out people will realize how much more work needs to be put in.

Hey y’all, had to comment on this before I even watched: My dad was born in this very hospital. During these experiments. The weekend he was born, his mother (a very pregnant black woman) drove all around Montgomery Alabama in active labor and was turned away by every hospital and clinic. The colored hospital, she was told, was in Tuskegee. So off she drove and the same time she arrived, a hurricane came with her. So that weekend Tuskegee faced floods and torrential rain. They told my grandparents to take my dad home while they focused on repairs, and it wasn’t until decades later did we learn what he was spared from. Every time I see the rain I think of how it saved my dad and in turn, my entire lineage. A lot of people like to say the harms of slavery, institutional racism, and segregation were years ago. But no, my boomer dad is still walking around wearing socks at the grocery store and talking to scores of people who have no idea the mortal danger my dad was in just for being born black. And that’s just one instance. There are many harms in life that disproportionately affect some more than others.
  • Bailey somehow looks like a vintage movie star/pinup girl/Nirvana groupie all at once and rocks it

I love how socially responsible Bailey is. She’s honest and careful with her story telling, and calls out the BS that happens. Keep bring these injustices to light girl! We appreciate you!
  • This story reminds me of The “father of modern gynecology” James Marion Sims. This monster experimented on enslaved people without anesthesia. You can find many statues and hospitals in his honor.

As a black woman, thank you for sharing this story! There is a lot of history out of Tuskegee, but the Tuskegee Experiment is definitely dark history. This experiment, as well as Henrietta Lacks’ story, is one of the MANY reasons Black Americans historically have a grave distrust of the medical system.
  • As someone whose family of from and still lives in Tuskegee, I really appreciate this video. My father would tell me stories from the town because he knew I wouldn’t have been taught it in school
  • @Sparrowarah
Also real important for people to know: If you’re allergic to penicillin there are other antibiotics that can be used to cure syphilis! 😂
  • @1sweetmess
I was waiting on this one. What baffles me is how these "doctors" didnt lose their licenses. They took oaths when they became medical doctors, but for the price of $37,500 they got away with it 🙄
  • @angelwings6186
Girl...the history of gynecology and obstetrics in the US is a freaking horror show of racism.
  • @kit8342
We studied this in pre-med and med school. This is one of the reasons why we have a lot of requirements for our research papers and we have to go through multiple ethical boards, especially when it involves human subjects. Also-people should really just be kind to other people. Sometimes I wonder why it’s so hard for others to just be decent human beings.

I'm a big fan of all your MMM, but I'm living for how Dark History is just leaning all the way in on all these awful, untalked about events. Please please PLEASE emphasize how recent these things are! People like to think this history is antiquated and no longer relevant, but we still face the effects TODAY. Love you so much Bailey!
  • @jamielandis4606
Thank you for saying the obvious out loud. I was brainwashed into thinking America was a pillar of morality as a child. I’ve been sensitive to injustices my whole life as an Asian person. It never goes away as long as some people want all the power.
  • When Tupac said “we ain’t meant to survive cause it’s a setup.” 😔 baby he didn’t lie.
  • Bailey in full face makeup in a t-shirt makes me feel like I can still dress up to stay home with my kid. Thank you for glamorizing lounging
  • As a lifelong, born and raised resident of Alabama, I truly appreciate you covering this story. I didn’t even know abt this experiment until I was grown and in college 20miles away from Tuskegee University. Thanks for using your platform to spread real truth.

You should make a “Dark History” lined journal hardback. Maybe blank pages for artsies? 🎨
