In this video I show you how you can play the major pentatonic scale over the whole bass guitar fretboard.

The best way to learn scales on the bass guitar is to:
1. First learn the note of the scale
2. Memorise the shape of the scale
3. Use this shape as building blocks

If you can memorise a shape for basic notes in a scale, you can then use this shape to play the scale over the whole bass fretboard. The notes of the major pentatonic scale make what is known as the 'box shape' and that is what I show you in this video lesson.

The scale shapes and exercises in this lesson will help you to open up the whole of the bass fretboard and also help you to practice playing smoothly on the bass which leads to more efficient and faster bass playing.

I play bass in the praise band at my church. Sometimes the music director asks me to improvise a bass line in an interlude. I can't begin to improvise. I have to take it home and study on it, noodle it out and practice until I can actually do it. I can spend an hour or two on four measures before I am ready for Sunday morning. I knew there was a pentatonic scale that could help me but I did not know what it was or how to play it. This video will be a HUGE first step in being able to add some fills. Thank you. Thank you.

Great video! Super easy to follow.
  • First time I’ve made that connection, being to move across the fret board is so cool thanks for that break thru🎉 thanks Boss
  • @Herminator66
Greg, thanks for the Major Pentatonic lesson. Seems like it's the little brother of the Minor Pentatonic, so good to have a solid framework to progress in!
  • @ShineMedia1
Brilliant, thank you! Pentatonic was a mystery to me, you're making it very easy to understand. When you know a lot and someone new knows nothing, it's very easy to assume people know what you're talking about ...you don't make that assumption and it's very helpful. I'm also clueless about what major and minor notes mean....a suggestion for a video? Anyway thanks I'm really getting a lot out of your videos!
  • Really great session My hands are large enough to stretch between 1 2 3 on E string with fingers 1 2 and 3 Thanks again

  • Hi Greg, first of all, congratulations on your lectures. I follow you from Italy. I wanted to know what program you use to make the animations in which you insert the letters, (like those of major and minor scales) . Thank you Max DAN
