Much has been written about enigmatic Swedish theatrical metal band Ghost B.C.—"subversive," "refreshing," "blasphemous"—but even in all those countless reviews, interviews, and thinkpieces do we miss the words that properly incapsulate what it is about this clan of nameless ghouls that makes them so endlessly captivating, hooking listeners from the most disparate corners of music fandom.

With a live show that more closely resembles a pre-apocalyptic occult ceremony than anything you might refer to as a "concert," the collective, helmed by current harbinger Papa Emeritus II, delivers spiritual awakening and religious deviance to their devoted followers. In the first episode of Papaganda, our mini-series on the cult of Ghost B.C., we explore the papal lineage, the reign of Emeritus II, and the future of the Ghost dynasty.

tobias as papa: speaking italian tobias as A nameless ghoul: flawless english while being swedish-
  • @sasca854
Papa: I'm like fine wine! Ghoul: He's a miserable, old, wounded, bitter man.
  • @MarkFreak12
When you realize that Tobias is the only one in this interview, speaking Italian as Papa, then speaking flawless English as the Ghoul... While being Swede...
  • @Belabor92
Haha, I love how he speaks in pseudo-Italian through the whole interview and then ends with "C'est la vie". These guys are just taking the piss and are enjoying that extremely.

The line "I hope he read his contract" line is AMAZING viewed from the future. The universe really is the best writer

"We wanted Ghost to sound like the band you missed out on, but have been there for all this time." Ghost was founded in 2008. This video was posted in 2013. It's 2017 and I wonder how I'm just now discovering Ghost. Well done Ghouls. Well done.
  • No one’s gonna mention he’s singing papa at 2:03?? I can’t with this band 😭
  • “I hope that he’s read his contract...” Lmao I love the lore and intrigue, even now that we know the real names. The idea of Satanic popes and a big clergy operating underground that have in-jokes and drama is hilarious.

Without the makeup he's Hitman after 20 years

I'm shocked by metalheads who say the aren't really metal because of the clean vocals. Um Iron Maiden?? Judas Priest?? Black Sabbath???????? And there are so many speed metal, doom metal (which is what they're considered), and classic metal bands have clean vocals. It's not your style, okay...but why does that make it any less credible to those who actually like it. They're entertaining and the music is catchy, that's all that matters. They're putting on an act and they have fun with it. They don't take their act dead serious, and it's all for good fun. Get over it.

"We wanted ghost to sound like the band you missed out on" I first discovered Ghost in 2010 by chance by stumbling across 'Satan Prayer' on youtube. I was listening to a lot of old doom metal and just randomly clicked on it. I knew absolutely nothing about them. Between the album artwork and the music, I was genuinely convinced that I was listening to a band from the 70s/80s. I was instantly hooked and thought to myself "How the hell have I never heard of Ghost before?!". It was only afterward when I researched who they were that I realized they were a new band.

He looks very intimidating as Papa Emeritus II. He gives me the chills.
  • @jamespll
-Say my name. -Papa Emeritus II -You're devildamn right.
  • @marienilsen2812
I remember when I first discovered this band. I had no idea about the prothetic mask and such, and I was shocked at how "old" Papa looked, as his voice sounded so much younger. But now, they are one of my favourite bands.

The amount of jealousy I feel towards the guys in this band is immense. It's almost heartbreaking how much I want to be in a band like Ghost. If you have Ghost, you have everything
  • @Tunaboy45
"but also because I just happen to love hard rock with a sexy beat" Can't stop laughing.
  • @MultiStar84
I don't know this band, but the coolest part was at the start when the guitar player gives that fan a fist bump. Fkn rock n' roll
  • @fbendz
2:50 The really fun thing here is that he goes to the men's room. "Herren" is german for [gentle]men. Ghost is a Swedish band and in Swedish Herren means The Lord. So he basically goes to take a dump in The Lord's toilet. :-)

Currently going down a Ghost wormhole and loving it.
