The automated floating solid waste clean-up system arrests floating solid waste – preventing it from polluting the water body.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), recently entered into a tripartite partnership with WRI India and DESMI (DESMI - YouTube) for the installation of an automated floating solid waste clean-up system. The system, set up in the Picket Nala (drain) near Ramgopalpet Police Station, Minister Road, Hyderabad (17.441264, 78.478631), arrests and removes floating solid waste from the waterbody, thereby, prevents it from polluting the Hussain Sagar Lake.

Over the years, the iconic lake has been adversely impacted by various forms of floating solid wastes. While such polluted water bodies impact biodiversity, they also choke the urban drainage systems adding to a city’s flooding woes. Within just three days of the launch, more than one ton (approximately) of floating solid waste, consisting of floating plastics, rubber, glass bottles and debris, was intercepted and cleared. By preventing the inflow of such floating solid wastes, this system has the potential to transform our critically polluted urban water bodies and can be easily replicated and scaled across other cities and states.
