James Ingram, who is a native of Akron, Ohio, now living in Los Angeles, who is a singer/musician/producer who began his career performing with the short-lived band Revelation Funk in the early '70s. After hearing a demo of him singing 'Just Once', Quincy Jones asked Ingram to perform on his new album in 1980, The Dude. The song, 'Just Once' was Ingram's first success, resulting in three Grammy nominations — Best New Artist, Best Pop Male Vocal, and Best R&B Vocal — winning in the two latter categories. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ingram had steady popular success singing duets, as well as songwriting. On that note, Ingram wrote 'P.Y.T : Pretty Young Thing' for the late Michael Jackson, for his Thriller album. He was also took part in the multi-artist collaboration song, 'We Are The World' in 1985. His solo albums didn't score high on the charts until 1990, when he scored his first solo hits, 'I Don't Have the Heart', and 'Its Real', which was a New Jack Swing R&B hit produced by Teddy Riley and the late Gene Griffin. Also in 1990, he was in the multi-artist collaboration on the well known love ballad 'Secret Garden' from the Back On The Block album from Quincy Jones. In the 1990s Ingram recorded two albums: two of them are his best-of compilations. Ingram brings down to earth realness and truth to every song that he writes and produces.

" As gently as I can". That was love, even at the end. A National loss for all us 80's babies.

This song is so profound, because he sings about the problem in so many relationships. We’re all quick to fall in love based on the physical, but do we take the time to know who the other person really is? Can we love them like they want to be loved based on their past experiences? Do we take time to know who they really are before we jump in with both feet? That’s the question that most people are not willing to consider or answer.
