An excerpt from a 1981 NOVA documentary "Artists in the lab" showing how holograms are made and how they work. Featuring the inventor of white light or "rainbow" holograms Stephen A. Benton (while at Polaroid Corporation) smoking a pipe in the lab to illustrate the beampath of the laser!

    So since there's no lens, each point on the film effectively works like a different "camera" observing the scene from a different angle? If that's close to right, then that's the closest I've come to understanding holograms.
