After winning two Academy Awards, actress Hilary Swank put her career on hold for three years to care for her father, who had a lung transplant. Now she stars in a movie that hits close to home: "Ordinary Angels," about a woman who tries to accomplish the impossible to help a young girl in need of a life-saving transplant. Swank talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about struggling to build her career, and what she gained from stepping away to spend time with her dad.

Hilary Swank is the real deal. Her “Million Dollar Baby” performance always stuck with me. True artist and beautiful human. May she feel her dad’s presence with her for the rest of her days.

Million Dollar Baby broke my heart. She is a phenomenal actress.

Good on her for reminding those who treated her rudely as a child that they were full of...anyway, LOVE Hilary Swank's work.

This is how its done...if you want to stay humble in celebrityville. She hasn't forgotten who she is while accepting her Oscars. We need more people like her in the biz.

Hilary shines in each role she takes on. I've always wondered why she disappeared, now I understand. I'm happy she's back and thriving 💙
  • I often wondered why Hilary Swank dropped out of the spotlight, but now I understand why. What a wonderful daughter to put aside her acting career at the height of her fame to care for her ailing father. I was so sad to hear that he had passed away, but I imagine that he lives on in a special place in Hilary's heart. I was so excited when she announced she was having twins at 49, and her recent photo of her babies is truly precious! I can't wait to see her new movie!

As a Louisville resident who remembers 1994 we remember that. Can’t wait to see the movie next week!

Now I have to watch the movie. Having relocated from CA to TX to help care for my mother who had dementia, I know the emotional roller coaster one goes through in caring for a loved one. A ‘family caregiver’ deserves their own academy award for their endless support ❤

Hilary Swank is easily one of the best actresses of the last 20 years. Such a brilliant woman! I wish she'd do something with Renée Zellweger.

She's an incredible storyteller and actor. Brava!
  • Last night I watched an amazing movie with Swank and Bonham Carter called "55 Steps." Both women were so good in their respective roles that you'd have trouble choosing a favorite. I'd never seen Hillary in a movie before, though I'd heard about her for years. She is the real deal! The movie was made, I believe, in 2017. I saw it on YouTube Free Movies. It was mesmerizing! I could not stop watching!
  • From the trailer park...to the ✨✨✨Oscars✨and to be able to say:"""No you didn't to those patronizing folks from back home cannot be measured....❤🙏🏼

Great actress! She put her time in, and it has paid off for her. Bravo!!

That's cute her and Leo as teen actors. Her show Alaska Daily about vanished Native women deserved more than one season (my dad did alot of the research they ended up using - fellow Bellinghamer!). Million Dollar Baby too heartbreaking to watch more than once (I also liked her Amelia Earhart) . Sorry about your dad. Keep being an angel, Hilary ❤
  • She's not only an amazing actress, she's a beautiful human being :-)
