The cornerstone of changing lanes safely and properly is to communicate your intention.

And remember, "signals are to tell other drivers that you wish to move over, not that you are moving over!"

Too many drivers fail to ask other drivers via their signals to help make a gap for them to merge and change lanes effectively.

If other drivers are asked and you give them time to react and respond, most of the time she/he will slow and make a space into which you can merge.

For the purposes of a road test and for safety, you must have 3 flashes on the signal before changing lanes.

The purpose of the the 3 signals is:

1) the first signal gets the attention of the other driver;
2) the second signal allows the other driver to locate your vehicle;
3) the other driver takes appropriate action.

In tandem with communication, you have to observe.

Before moving your vehicle laterally, ensure that you shoulder (head) check, and after the 3 flashes have completed and immediately before moving the vehicle shoulder check again.

And ensure that you leave your signal on until you are completely in the lane into which you are moving.

Good luck on your road test.

    So does the head check here mean mirror check?
  • I'm 26 years old and have had severe anxiety to start driving. Luckily I lived in BC where we had great public transit. I've now moved to the states and can't survive without driving. Your videos are helping me beyond belief to get over my fears. Thank you so much!! ♥
  • I always get so anxious soon as I signal like I have to hurry up and move like the other cars are gonna be expecting me to merge immediately but I realized I was over thinking and scaring myself. 😥

    I must say, out of all driving instructors on YouTube, you have the best camera set up for us learners to see what we ought to. Thanks for that! 4:26

    Oh, Canada... You are guys are sooooo nice. Lol. Try this maneuver in Boston and watch the car you are merging into ACCELERATE! Literally, witnessed this today a couple of times while conducting a driving lesson. As always, a very informative video and I am grateful.
  • Everyone over there in Canada is so nice! When you drive over here in Germany and you want to change lanes, the other car accelerates and literally tries to prevent you from entering their lane.

    I'm very nervous because I'm almost 25 with hardly any driving experience but i have been studying the handbook and watching these videos. Hopefully when I pass the written test I'll be starting my practice with confidence. Your videos are very helpful sir and I thank you so much for taking your time to help others in need for acquiring their licenses.

    I am 59 years old and will get my driver's license tomorrow IF I pass. I feel prepared AND love these videos. the time for me to continue with driver's education is one word: ALWAYS. Undiagnosed ADHD and anxiety kept me back until I got treatment. It has helped move me forward immensely...plus a great great driver's ed teacher. Let's NOT forget this. I have more CONFIDENCE....latin for FAITH in oneself...………..

    I failed my driving test today, but watching your videos calms me. I will continue to watch your videos for another week. I have major anxiety driving during the day. I have started doing the breathing exercises you recommend in another video that you did about the DMV test. I use minerals to destress, as well as essential oils, thinking positive thoughts, stretching before I get in the vehicle, and watching how to videos. I really hope I pass my test a second time!

    I'm 30 years old and have been driving for 15 years. Although most of this stuff is intuitive at this point for me, I still have a lot of anxiety with changing lanes in heavy traffic or other drivers overtaking me from the wrong side. In particular, I learned a lot from your handling of the situation at ~13:20, trying to switch into the right lane, while a speedy driver was overtaking you on that side -- that always makes me nervous, but your handling of the situation (keeping the signal on for the rest of traffic, holding steady, and waiting until he passes) was very enlightening. Watching this was a good reminder to stay aware of the road but keep calm and not to panic -- seems like most near accidents are due to panicky or ill-managed communication. Was actually really fun and informative watching this whole video, despite my tenure as a licensed driver. Thanks for the nice video, great work you're doing here!

    I have trouble changing lanes both because I pay too much attention to what’s behind me than what’s beside me and I don’t give myself enough room. This makes my lane changes less comfortable and I find myself second guessing them. What I’ll try to do is build a routine on changing lanes. Three turning signals with a shoulder check and then one final shoulder check after the three turning signals.
