Travelers waited out widespread delays at U.S. airports on Tuesday, an ominous sign heading into the long July 4 holiday weekend, which is shaping up as the biggest test yet for airlines that are struggling to keep up with surging numbers of passengers.

In some cases, delays ran several hours at airports in the Northeast, as thunderstorms pounded the region.

At various times, the Federal Aviation Administration held up flights bound for LaGuardia Airport in New York and Reagan Washington National and Baltimore-Washington airports near the nation's capital.

By evening on the East Coast, about 6,500 flights had been delayed and about 1,900 canceled. United Airlines, with a major hub in Newark, New Jersey, canceled about 500 flights or 18% of its schedule, and JetBlue canceled 16% of its flights, according to FlightAware.

KTLA's Samantha Cortese reports June 27, 2023.

I cant stand these holidays. Just stay home. Travelling makes evrrything go up. Gas prices, hotels.

If we had new passenger trains throughout the country it would be an asset and pay for itself.

Always a weather crisis which delays/cancels flights at holiday time over the last couple of years. It's almost if they manufacture the weather.

American Airlines, flying from Charlotte to LA area. Delayed from 8 pm until 11 pm and later told it will be 5am departure. I was given a hotel voucher. The hotel is all the way across town 😛25 minute cab ride when the roads are nearly empty; managed to almost get hit by a speedy-drunk-driver too, the cabbie didn't even see him cross directly in front of us. It's a 2 star hotel. Received the voucher about 12:50 am. Checked in at the hotel at 1:46 am. Called for a cab at 2:50 am, 30 minutes to arrive... it's a 20 minute cab ride. Should arrive at the airport by 3:45 am ready for a 5 am departure. A hotel voucher is considered a valid compensation for an overnight delay no matter how little time is available for its use. (I would have been happier with airline miles that I could use in-part to make my own hotel arrangement.)
