The baffling thing about Arthur Weighs In was that he wasn't drawn fatter. When Doug or Hey, Arnold did the same premise, they actually drew the characters as heavier. They maintained a balance by making it about healthy eating and exercise, while also dealing with body insecurity.

I remember the cussing episode, I watched it at my grandparents and it blew their minds that a kid’s show would even touch on swearing. Then my grandma said if your going to say bitch just say it.

Speaking as a lifelong theatre kid, Arthur's costume not fitting isn't his fault. Either the costumer didn’t measure hin correctly (in which they can modify them), or those were old pants he outgrew. Even beyond the problematic messaging, the premise doesn't make any sense.

Honestly, DW using a friend as a test subject and a human shield in case she would get in trouble is both equally evil and brilliant.

I remember watching the swearing episode and being mad that everyone was blaming DW for the swearing and then refusing to tell her why it was wrong. I was a child at the time and wanted to know. So I tried swearing in front of my parents to get them to tell me what's wrong and they didn't really care because "they're just words". But my teacher told me not to say those words (she still didn't explain beyond "it's not nice"). It's so weird that the show decided to tackle this topic but chickened out of actually explaining it to kids, which only made me experiment. It's also really funny that literally everyone acted like swearing was the worst thing imaginable.

A dog saying they don't carry "husky size" seems ironic on a few different levels 😂

That Bleep episode taught me that some parents have VERY different approaches to swear words. I remember when I was like 7 my parents would blast their uncensored Lil Wayne CDs in the car lmao

oh hell, I remember Arthur Weighs In. Not the weird fantasy segments tho, the part where he's shamed by a retail worker. That genuinely contributed to my body insecurity as a child.
  • I think the initial bleep explanation scene they did before the episode actually started was a legal loop hole so that they could imply cursing while asserting that, canonically, the characters aren't actually swearing. So they can still sell the show as not containing any depictions of characters swearing. The point wasn't to teach kids about how bleeps work, it was to sidestep the spirit of the law or some company policy while still technically adhering to it. That's my best guess, anyway.

The one where Arthur's Dad attempted to turn their late mum into a gundam in order to link all of human conscience together was absolutely wild
  • Ironically, that basketball exercise with PBG holding out a ball in front of him is an actual exercise my physical therapist had me do to strengthen my nerve-damaged arms. But my therapist didn’t call it the “Bahsehtball holl”, which is known to be the exercise’s scientific name.

One time I was looking after my step dad’s niece and she wanted to watch TV so I put on Arthur for her. The episode that came on that day was the bleep episode and I had never heard of that one before, so it caught me so off guard. Seeing Arthur talk about “The Altos” while the characters on the set are just cursing up a storm was too funny to me.

I work at a news station, can confirm that not live shows just have the edited beep, but for those small 10% times, there is someone that actually has to press the bleep button. For mostly callers if they're having that kind of segment, as well as a 30 second delay so you can get the bleep in correctly. Or when a news anchor lets one slip. Can be fined by the FCC if a big one escapes.

Apperentlu there was an interview. The word they picked for the 'swear' is chicken. Makes it 10x funnier watchinf the ep with that knowledge 😂
  • @wordplay8997
As much as Arthur taught us how to act as kids, it now teaches us as adults how not to act as parents

There's other things from arthur that surprised people let alone sometimes sensitive, like the April 9th episode a 2002 episode it's basically a 9/11 but more kid friendly and the lunch lady having cancer but got cut off the air because of a reference to Lance Armstrong
  • @300kyuubi
I always thought that Arthur had anxiety, slight depression, and constant paranoia Still a great show

I specifically remember one morning when I was home-schooled and would watch Arthur episodes before doing starting my work for the day, and the Bleep episode came on, and my Mom came in to confirm I was still watching Arthur during the intro sequence of the episode, and then continued what she was doing after confirming it

Man, the fat episode is how eating disorders start. It should have affirmed that a little bit of pudge is perfectly fine so long as you have a varied and healthy diet and stay active. Instead, it just says that any excess weight is bad and that you aren't normal for having it.
