When I was young, I worked up in the high arctic as a carpenter when we'd get called out to repair a door or something outside in these kinds of conditions, mostly whiteout. It was tough sledding but we got the job done ,then back inside for a bite to eat then hit the rack for some shut eye. One night I spied out my little window a small arctic fox curling himself up in a ball waiting for the snow to cover him to keep him nice and warm. I heard arctic wolves do the same thing just lay down in the snow and let it cover them. All of the buildings were connected together by nylon rope that we would traverse between buildings. We always worked in pairs looking out for each other as we went and worked. The last time that I was up there was in the 80's but I miss it and the people that I worked with. The last tour that I did was for 9 months including all winter from Oct to April in the dark. I'll sleep good tonight listening to this . Thanks for posting this......;-]

These sounds remind me of being in Northern Norway in the Artic Circle. Cold but slept so deeply.

The hint of a moan they call a banchee wind. I lived on the north slope of Arctic Alaska a while. In the winter was total darkness and so cold it sucked all moisture out of the air. It’s a dessert climate. It’s so cold the grains of snow and ice rub against each other like sand creating a low moan of a howl. Like a ghostly woman wailing. Like this. The coldest I experienced was -65F with a -84F windchill. The snow with no breakers traveled long distances before it covered buildings whole. I remember shaking frost off my covers where they touched the walls. 20yrs I lived in the bush. It sounded like this.
  • This is something that keeps me asleep all night, I wish there were sounds from Alaska here. -dc
