When a line is used, the line is out of bounds and the stake is an indicator only

What about the local rule where a golfer can place his ball two club lengths into the fairway with a two stroke penalty adjacent to where the ball went out of bounds?
  • @php4u
Good video, thanks. Just to clarify, red line = penalty area, white = OB?

Thanks for this video and explanation. I recently started playing and when I hit a ball OB or it was lost in the very long grass (not from tee), the guys said to drop in the rough and I could not drop on the fairway. Is that correct?
  • Another question please. What is the penalty for a ball lost in the rough beside the fairway that isn't in any penalty area & you can't find it in 3 minutes, say because the rough is extremely tall?

What if your ball is two club lengths in the out of bounds area but is unplayable, can you claim the unplayable lye rule and come back two club lengths into play with 1 stroke penalty?
  • If I hit the ball off the tee into out of bounds area is it a one stroke penalty or three off the tee ?

What is the ruling if your ball is near an OB Stake, and during your BACKSWING you strike the OB Stake? Would any ruling be different if your backswing did or did not actually move/displace the OB Stake?
  • @taz104
In the end of the video, the ball is touching the stake, so not fully out of bounds and playable. Do you remove the stake to take the shot? Nevermind! You answered in the Yellow video. Moveable obstruction. :) Thanks!

The ob white stake from tee box is brutal

What if you discover your ball is OB only when you walk up to it?
  • @alienrenders
That's incorrect information about the stakes when there's also line. If there are both lines and stakes, the white stakes are visual aids only to tell the player where the approximate OOB area is. You cannot use them to determine if it's OOB or not. Only the line does that. The ball at 12:49 is 100% OOB. The entire ball is within the white line and is thus OOB.
  • According to new rules, we can hit a ball near the O.B are with 2 penalties. Obviously, this case it is better to hit a ball at the place of last shot.

What if the course doesn't have stakes? (Ex. Hitting your ball in to a "native grass area" but there are no indications of red or white stakes or anything for that matter)

If you think about it, it’s not “half of a piece of pie”. It’s actually “half of a pie”. In other words, it’s a semi-circle.

You weren’t very clear discussing the out-of-bounds margin. When a line is present, the inside edge of the line defines the out-of-bounds margin. In that situation, the stakes are only there for identification. If only stakes are present, then as you indicated, the inside edge of the stakes at ground level, defines the margin.

I'm confused,,, the 2019 rule change allows for an OB ball to be placed inbounds on the fairway for a two stroke penalty, which eliminates the need to go back for a stroke and distance penalty, thus speeding up play a bit...

Guess you didn't have the time to make a video about the situation: You hit your teeshot, didn't play a Provisional, walk all the way to find your ball is OB, can't return to the tee box to re tee because you have another group of players over you, New rule states you can drop a ball 2 clubs inside the OB line with 2 penalties, that means you lie 3 and Will hit your 4th shot, right? By the way, your rivals can force you to play a Provisional from the tee even if you think your ball is not OB? Thanks for the info, is very important for my game 😉

Wordy. Could have shaved the length of video by 50%.
