Wild Italy - Part 2: Ash and Lava | Nature Documentary

Watch 'Wild Italy - Part 3' here:    • Wild Italy | Part 3: Islands of Wind ...

In this episode:
Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe and it lies in Sicily, surrounded by the unique landscape of Mediterranean woods and high-altitude plant communities where many species such as honey buzzards nest in the oak and birch woods, colonies of bee-eaters in the Alcantara river gorges, foxes, wild boars and snakes in oak woodland at the base of the mountain.

The film shows daylight and amazing nocturnal sequences of the latest eruptions, with aerial views shot by drones at 3,500 meters of altitude. There is also a detailed description of the endemic plants and insects living in the high-altitude lava fields and how continuous volcanic eruptions allow the mineral world to be colonized by living beings.

A million years ago, Italy was a battlefield where enormous, violent volcanoes raised mountains and erased valleys, in a world with no room for plants or animals. Then, a hundred thousand years ago, the craters turned into lakes and wildlife conquered the volcanic waters: from spectacled salamanders living in the lakes to the giant sperm whale swimming in the sea that surrounds the islands, skies dwelled by golden eagles hunting at the top of the volcano and Eleonora’s falcons living on the cliffs.
