How I Shade A Tattoo?

Have you ever asked yourself "Where does the shading go" or "How Do I Shade A Tattoo"?

In this video I walk you through my approach and thought process in which I take to achieve a desired result. This entire video is real time so you can be with me every step of the way upon shading this tattoo.

In this video we will be going over the entire process REAL TIME from start to finish, outlining the design, and where I apply the shading and why.

When I shade a tattoo it has to make sense. What that means is I have to know why I am putting the shading where ever I am putting it and it has to have some sense to it. I found for me personally it is super easy to make the tattoo go flat and lose it's dimension and or form. This is where sense and practicality come into play for me upon shading. Often times less is more.

PLEASE NOTE: I want to point out that this is not a tutorial on how to properly shade a tattoo, or how to shade, or the correct way to go about shading. This video is sharing my approach and thought process behind shading and why I put the shading where I do. This is not by any means the only way to approach shading, so take what you want and leave what you don't.

I will list the timestamps below for you so you can easily navigate to a section you want to watch or re-watch.

For this tattoo I used my trusty and the new CNC P6 Tattoo Machine along with a Quelle 12-03RL needle cartridge. I prefer to use a 3RL for shading as I can be precise with where I put the ink.

Just before you apologized for ranting, I actually started tearing up a little because of your words and how passionate you are about tattooing. It's true, individual style is just so beautiful. You don't get a lot of artist letting people know that there is no truly correct preference in shading, it almost takes a weight off of learning, as I am entering the part of were I'm taking this stage of tattooing to the next level on my path. I'll be looking to see if you have a blending video for color too!! Thank you for sharing the knowledge. Passing on the power lol
  • Let just say I’ve never sat and watched a whole 2 hour YouTube video thank you I learned alot

Keep these videos coming we appreciate ya a lot
  • This is super relaxing to watch and yhe way you speak makes it easy to watch the video with the audio on. I really dont even get on you tube very much becausei find it overwhelming but, audio is A1. I own a studio. The other artist's in my shop are Body tattooers and while I also do Body tattoos about 40% of the time (mostly flash and traditional body work) I actually specialize in permanent makeup which is the complete opposite spectrum ... My main movement for lips and brows is this whipshading/stipiling technique. This is literally one of the most satisfying videos I've ever watched. This makes me want to try this kind of style and shading more often on body tattoos... I've only watched a handful of your videos but I could watch this again and again. 🙏💎
