180 Days of Spelling and Word Study: Grade 3, Unit 24 (AW Sound with A Patterns)

Published 2024-01-22
This week students are introduced to the advanced vowel sound /aw/. They study four different letter patterns that produce an /aw/ sound: AU, AUGH, AL, and WA. They notice that AU and AUGH never show up at the end of a word (with the exception of LAUGH, which is pronounced differently.) Students are reminded that CAUGHT and TAUGHT are irregular past tense verbs for catch and teach. As they learn the meanings of each vocabulary word, students label nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They are also introduced to the prefix PRE.
