  • So the First Doctor left Gallifrey to find out what is that driving force that allows good to win over evil, and without realizing it, he BECAME that driving force, and in essence, he became that which inspired him to leave in the first place. So I ask you, who really composed Beethoven's Fifth?

This, THIS, is what makes the Doctor special. No super special backstory. No grand destiny in store for them. The Doctor is just a madman in box who ran away from Gallifrey out of fear and curiosity. Passing through, helping out, and learning on the way

I love when basically ANY Dalek has an actual conversation with a character, especially the Doctor
  • @Stormandfire
I like the subtle implication in One's answer that he wasn't entirely good when he first left Gallifrey, that it took time to be the person he is, the person Twelve is.
  • "Good is not a practical survival strategy, it requires loyalty, self-sacrifice, love" is now my favorite quote.
  • 3:33-“You’re amazing Doctor. Never forget that”Since this was Moffatt’s last episode of his era, I’d like to think this was him expressing his feelings toward the character and the show.
  • @DoctorDodge
Easily, EASILY the best moment for the First Doctor in this episode. No awkward sexism jokes, no out of character moments, just a great, Hartnell-esque speech that suits the First Doctor perfectly. Even better, Bradley delivered it just right.

I love they brought back “The Doctor’s Theme”
  • @Yggi11
2:08 "There is good" (Twelve's face is onscreen) "and there is evil" (Rusty) I only just noticed that
  • @Zer0Jo
Did anyone else notice the planet they go to in order to find the dalek Rusty, Villengard? It's home to the banana groves the ninth doctor mentioned when talking to Jack Harkness about his sonic blaster. On Villengard, the weapon factories that produced sonic tech were transformed into banana groves by the Doctor himself lol. As he says, "Banana's are good".

"You're going to have to stop shooting at me" sounded very Tom Bakerish!
  • @alunjones6823
David Bradley is amazing as the First Doctor. He was born for it. If they do make another anniversary special, they better add him in the episode.

“I don’t trust hugs, it’s just a way to hide your face”
  • @FirstLast-cg2nk
Why is evil so equally balanced by good? It's simple: Evil is easy. Most, if not all, people who turn to evil do so because being evil is less personally taxing: When the plans of the evil fall apart, they run away to scheme another day. Evil won't throw away valuable resources to salvage a bad plan: They'll cut their losses, abandon their allies, and flee. Someone prepared to do good is prepared to do it for the long haul, and won't stop until either victory or death.

"But the world is not a fairytale" And that's why we have Doctor Who
  • @LeTropeur
I really like the theory that this episode is the Twelfth Doctor trying to process his grief and to convince himself to regenerate by creating a nice adventure with his distorted memory of his First incarnation, where everyone who died has been saved, and where he can finally remember Clara. It's basically the Doctor telling himself "You're not doing this for nothing." and acknowledging in his own way that he matters.
  • Probably still my favorite special. The First Doctor wasn't a "problem solver" he just floated about and occasionally fixed things because he or his companions accidentally broke something, and occasionally coming across people like the Daleks and Cybermen. It wasn't until the Second Doctor where he began going out of his way to help and save others at his own risk. Even in the early Hartnell stories, he was more concerned with "leaving" than helping. This special in a way helped explain the transition of the First into the Second and why the Doctor does what he now does best, helping and saving others.
  • @vordman
Bill was actually a very likeable companion. It's a shame she only had one series as she's much better than the current crew.
  • It doesn't matter who played the first Doctor..William Hartnel or other look alike actors. HE WILL ALWAYS BE THE FIRST DOCTOR!
