Really sad to hear this news. I grew visiting Mendocino while growing up in the San Francico Bay Area. It boggles my mind that this dwindling of the Kelp has occured in just 10 years. So devastating!

As you take out the urchins. What are the plans seeding sea floor? Kelp farms? Giant kelp is so fast to grow why don’t we hear more about farming to restore?

Really impressive, inspired work! The setting of traps is a fantastic idea. Any chance of using technology such as underwater drones or bottom crawlers to locate and either collect or neutralize the purple urchins? Do they need to be removed completely or could they be destroyed in place? Thank you for your work!

Apparently purple urchins are edible as well, so I hope you can 😢put the ones you trap to good use!
