Thomas Sowell also did a very broad and deep study of slavery. I haven’t read it, but watched about an hour and a half of YT videos where he reads from his book. Was very insightful!

Slight correction. “Most people think of American…” That would be most US Americans. The rest of the world will think of examples closer to home or from other cultures. E.g. people in Latin America will often think about the slavery of indigenous people by the Spanish, Christians will have come across it in many passages in the Bible. Interestingly enough, most people from anywhere seem to think of it as a thing of the past when it is estimated that there have never been more slaves at any one time on the planet than right now.

It's not that Americans tend to think primarily of slavery as a U.S phenomenon, it's that most Americans think it's unique to the U.S. The word slave comes from the word slav, meaning eastern europe, but that doesn't matter to the average American snowflake.

Started listening to this on audiobook 3 days ago...what a coincidence. Great this far.
-
I believe there's around 30 million slaves still today, and a very big portion of that is in Africa.

Not Antarctica. Unless there were some penguin slaves that they're not telling us about.

You have been cursed with eyes that can see. Thank you for all the truth bombs!

Looks like a Pinker-level examination by the width of that book. I’m interested.
-
It is quite a good study, I am about 35% of the way through it. Much more inclusive than anything else I have ever seen.
-
Thank you Dr. C. I enjoy your commentary on many topics, but you bring an esp. balanced and forensic approach to the racial debate. Will check this out!
-
The word slave actually comes from from the word Slav because during the Middle Ages they were the people group that were used most as slaves
-
Great line from the Robin Williams movie, "Moscow on the Hudson." The security guard taking Williams, a political refuge seeking asylum in New York, says, "Well, one thing you could say about slavery. At least the work was steady." To which Williams replies, "Just like in Russia." During Soviet communism, it was illegal to not have a job.

Coleman is the reason I got into Thomas Sowell, you bet I'm gonna take his recommendations into high consideration hehehe
-
What happened to African slaves in America was something different than any other slavery in recorded history.
-
Thank you 🙏🏿

Finally, someone addresses the broader view on this important topic! Everytime I want to point that out I get disqualified because I'm an old white man.
