A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE Movie Review | Lupita Nyong'o | Joseph Quinn

Published 2024-06-28
We disagree on "A Quiet Place: Day One," but we tried not to argue too loudly about it. The prequel to 2018's "A Quiet Place" takes us back to the day of the alien invasion in New York City. Lupita Nyong'o stars as a woman dying of cancer, who finds unexpected purpose when she connects with a law student (Joseph Quinn) and the two make their way uptown. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski ("Pig"), who co-wrote the story with John Krasinski, director and star of the first two films. Co-starring Djimon Hounsou, Alex Wolff and a ridiculously smart cat. In theaters now.

When Alonso said we couldn't use the ipod Nano to indicate the year the event occurred, I wondered if the device stored some of her late father's music. Lupita really made that pizza storyline work and I cried with her when she found that photo. Given this is the 3rd go at "sound is deadly" I thought this was really well done. As was the trailer - it didn't reveal too much... given I went in thinking Djimon had a main role! Joseph was a great scene partner with Lupita. And as unlikely as it was that the cat was mostly silent, I'm a sucker for cute pets. I guess that replaced having children at the centre. I almost wished the children at the fountain had a bigger part. It was strange to see the credits with a very short list of actors.

Lupita and Joseph acted so well. Great at showing fear😢

Michael Bay's autobiography will be called A Loud Place.

personally... i loved it.. and the whole "she's already dying" thing.. she just wanted to die at "home" in harlem... and she was determined to do such... she wanted him to go.. not cuz she didn't need him or his "help".. but she wanted him to get to safety, knowing that she was headed toward the monsters not away from them and she just wanted him to get to safety... i thought the way it was written was perfect... much more sentimental than most horror stories and that made me like it even more.. ..

Mostly agree with Christy. Very tense, and the two leads are fantastic. I thought the NYC setting was a fresh change of setting. And the final scene/shot is both sad and incredibly satisfying.

As a fan of this series, I'm sat regardless. Always love hearing y'all disagree though! It's a friendly dynamic we don't see enough of these days.

This would have worked so much better if Lupita was in New York to get a special treatment that only one doctor knows how to do. Then have her and that doctor fight to survive and hopefully get somewhere safe where he can do the procedure. Her life should have been in the balance not already canceled.

6:16 Yeah but Alonso, maybe she has a bucket list that she wants to complete? 😄

Alex Wolff was in Pig too! Lupita is always amazing, one of my favorite actresses. I like these films, and am excited for it. I can see how this could stop as a trilogy tho, b/c the stories may get a bit redundant.

I was surprised how much emphasis there was on the cat. There's an incredible amount of the cat. I also liked how it's more about a testament on life than a straight action film .

My favorite reviews are the ones where you DISAGREE. I will always take hearing an opposing opinion on art that is articulated well and starts a discussion more than having my opinion parroted back at me. Cheers to you both!🥂

I saw it earlier and thought it was a lot of fun and terrifying at times also was only 1 hr 40 minutes and the theater was packed too which was good to see

Really enjoyed this one. Excellent visuals and, of course, sound. Definitely recommend.

Was on the fence on this one until your Breakfast All Day entry....am now even more torn. The first one creeped me out royally, the second less so yet still worked, and am also not certain that dust-covered, in-disarray lower Manhattan wouldn't trigger some mighty potent and upsetting memories (lost two friends in the Towers). That said, we do love Ms. N'yongo, and THEN, there’s the cat, and, as we all know, dogs are loyal servants, cats are upper management. Will have to consider. "Pig" ruled, so Mr. Woolf's participation is another plus. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.
  • Great review. Grace from 'Beyond the Trailer' mentioned that the cat could be a reference to 'Alien' and I hope it is. I still need to watch 'A Quiet Place 2', which I'm excited to see.
  • I personally felt the action/thriller sequences to be underwhelming. It didn’t feel like there was anything new or inventive to really get the tension up. But what did work for me in the film was the Quieter human moments. That bar scene particularly really captured the authentic intimacy that made the first film so emotionally good.
  • I'm not surprised you two are split on this. I'm hearing a lot of mix reviews on it. I can't see it this weekend. May try and check it out on the 4th since I have that day off.
  • @somakkamos
I loveeeeee it when you guys disagreee..its so respectful..no attempt to convince the other... great review as always ❤❤❤❤
