Colonizer, which comes from the verb Colonise, is used especially in contexts in which the exploitative nature of Colonialism is being discussed or evoked; in phrases like "Coloniser” mindset/mentality" it implies a benefit from or even active participation in that exploitation. A penal colony is a place where prisoners are sent to live. To Colonise is the act or practice of appropriating something that one does not own or have a right to and Colonization, not to be confused with Colonisation (biological) refers to large-scale population movements where the migrants maintain strong links with their ancestors' former country, gaining significant privileges over other inhabitants of the territory by such links. When Colonization takes place under the protection of clearly colonial structures, it may be called Settler Colonialism. This often involves the settlers entirely dispossessing earlier inhabitants, or instituting legal and other structures which systematically disadvantage them. In its basic sense Colonization can be defined as the process of establishing foreign control over target territories or people for the purpose of cultivation, often through establishing colonies and possibly by settling them.
