Please someone make a movie about these 1800s-era former slaves who sat in Congress and the Senate. What an amazing story.

I truly admire the work of Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. his shows are awesome and the insight he reveals is just spectacular.
  • Why was this interview so short? This had to be an extended one! Finally something with insight and information about the US history.
  • @caroltesol1
Stephen, this interview was way too short. Prof. Gates was just warming up!

Thank you professor Gates. Too many people that don't know our nation's history minimize Trump's role in what is happening to our nation. I am angry, but my anger goes beyond the Democrat vs Republican divide. Those like myself that have studied American history can spot troubling signs that can strip my freedom. That is why we can laugh about Trump and his supporters, but we must connect their actions, words and beliefs to our history. "THOSE THAT FORGET THE PAST OUR DOOMED TO REPEAT IT"

Well the way he speaks, the clamness of his personality just makes me adore a man of his staure more. Such a great man

Seven minutes with him and 11 with hank? I like hank but c’mon this was interesting. Although I concede he might have had prior engagements that prevented his stay.
  • Learn every day. It is a good day when you hear about the reconstruction. Im from the Netherlands.
  • I'm from the UK, so we didn't do it at school, but I genuinely don't think I've ever actually heard about the reconstruction before, which is a tad shocking.

There are LSSC episodes where Stephen should go with 2 instead of 3 guests and let the second guest have more time. This is one of those.
  • @ursaltydog
Would have loved to have listened to him longer!
  • hehe.. Everyone talking about the interview being too short.. I guess that’s why he’s a successful Harvard lecturer.. He leaves you wanting to learn more.. In this case, he leaves you wanting to buy the book, so mission accomplished.. ;-)

I learned a lot from this interview, wish it had been a lot longer.

I was semi-shocked when Dr Gates said Reconstruction isn't studied in school. It still was when I took US history in high school (1961-65, Eagle Pass, Tx). Two things I remember: The KuKluxKlan was started with the purpose of keeping black people away from the polls. Andrew Johnson missed removal by just one vote at his impeachment trial. There was a lot more but now I'm vague on which facts were in that course and which ones I learned later.
  • Damn, I really wanted to hear him continue. Guess we all gotta see the documentary now 🤷🏻‍♂️.
  • May we have an extended and uncut interview, please? This was far to short for such an important topic and guest!
  • I love this man!!! History repeats itself, sadly. It’s great to have people like Henry Louis Gates Jr to remind us of our country’s dirty past.
