Loretta Young was an American actress who graced the screen with her charming presence for nearly eight decades until her eventual retirement in 1994. She was born with the name Gretchen Young, although that would later change. She and her two sisters, Polly Ann and Elizabeth Jane, were all involved in acting from a very young age. Elizabeth Jane later took the stage name of Sally Blane, and was a successful actress who appeared in over 100 films. Polly Ann also acted as an adult, but she wasn't quite as well known as Elizabeth Jane.

Loretta Young, however, soared in popularity over her sisters. Her first role as an actor was in the silent film Sweet Kitty Bellairs, when she was just three years old! After that, she continued to act into high school, when she was discovered by manager John McCormick, who entered her into a contract. John McCormick's wife, Colleen Moore, was impressed by her acting ability, and suggested she go by the name Loretta instead of Gretchen. The first time she was billed under her new stage name was in the 1928 film The Whip Woman.

Loretta Young soon became a darling of American film. Before long, she was co-starring with some of the most popular male actors at the time. In 1953, she was even given her own television show, which was originally named Letters to Loretta. The name was eventually changed to The Loretta Young Show, and it ran until 1961. The show was incredibly successful, and she earned three Emmy Awards for her work.

Audience members and devout fans were always stunned by her grace and beauty onstage. While she and her sisters all began acting at a young age, it seems only Loretta Young had the true gift of an actor. In total, she appeared in 112 films, with some of her most acclaimed being The Farmer's Daughter, Come to the Stable, and Ramona. Sweet Loretta Young was beloved by the nation. Whenever she appeared on screen, she made acting look easy.

In real life, however, Loretta Young was incredibly troubled. Behind that smiling facade, she hid a tragedy so devastating that she kept it a secret from everyone except her daughter. Years after her death in 2000, the horrifying truth has finally been revealed. In today's video, we're going to reveal the tragic reason why Loretta Young had to keep her baby with Clark Gable a secret. • While in the army~My Dad met her at a train station during the war. He said she was so friendly and took time to ask him question and make him feel important. No ones perfect. She did the right thing at the right time. ❤️
  • I THINK THAT WAS WONDERFUL THAT SHE FIGURED OUT A WAY TO SAVE HER BABIES LIFE AND TAKE CARE OF HER AS HER MOM.

She did not only what was best for herself but also for her child, Being illegitimate or a bastard as I was called was a heavy burden to carry. Her daughter was lucky to have such a wonderful mother.
  • I saw her in person at a Chinese restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio many many years ago. She had to be much older but she was stunning. Years later i saw Linda Carter and was amazed that both ladies were far more beautiful in person. The screen did not do either any justice.

ABSOLUTELY She did the right thing keeping her pregnancy quiet. In those days there would’ve been no Eno forgiveness and an amazing career would I have been lost. I frequently saw her at early morning mass in Westwood at Saint Pauls. She was as gorgeous in person as she was on the screen. What an amazing woman. See you on the other side Loretta Young! ❤️

Loretta was sensible enough to understand the situation. She acted according to her faith and values. No one can fault her for what she did. RSP

She was a neighbor of mine in the 70s and 80s. She was absolutely charming and did much charity work for the homeless.

Later, Loretta Young helped other young unwed mothers and wrote about it in a 1966 Readers Digest article called "Unforgettable Sister Winifred." Sister Winifred was a nursing nun who ran a home for unwed mothers who were mostly aged 11 to 15.

Brilliant idea and plan to keep her baby. She did it instead of aborting and kept her reputation in tact during a time when would have been blackballed by Hollywood and maliciously slandered by the media. Kudos to the late Loretta “Gretchen” Young.

Man, the clothes this woman wore were spectacular. Gorgeous! She had such a cute figure, I bet the wardrobe depts had fun making clothes and dressing her. Like their own living doll. I wish women still dressed with class like in her era.

Such a sweet wonderful real lady. Unfortunately she had to hide her baby girl for months because of the times. Well she showed them all!!! All three of her children grew up as stable good people.
  • This is indeed a heartwarming story. I was meant to be an abortion, and from foster care I was raised by family. My mother did nothing. I commend Loretta Young for having found a way to keep, and nurture her daughter. Wow.

I used to watch her show as a little girl and loved her. She was so beautiful and classy. I continued to watch her movies. I remembered when she died. It sadden me greatly. Miss this fabulous lady.
  • I feel that because if the situation and it also being Hollywood, Loretta Young did the right thing, and she never forgot her daughter which is so very heartwarming to know how she got her back. She loved her daughter and was determined to raise her on her own even if that is what it took!,!
  • @anye76
Back then unwed mothers were severely frowned upon. She would have lost everything had she bolded proclaimed I got knocked up by Clark Gable, a married man. To say she would have been dragged was an understatement. It was the best she could do given the circumstances.
  • @Joanzak52
Hollywood was known to pressure their actresses to get an abortion. She did the right thing to keep her career
  • @lindafaucz9120
I have always been a fan of hers. Scan do no wrongs. I loved her and if that was how she managed to keep her daughter and her good name . It's a shame they had To go such lengths to protect themselves. I'm proud of her strength
  • @163pete
We were not there in her time frame. So I would say it's none of our business how she handled her life. She did what she thought was best at the time for her.
  • I can't imagine a mother giving up her child for adoption but happily she was able to get her daughter back! I remember her program in the 50's & loved seeing her as Loretta always had such a beautiful smile & she was beautiful!!!
