How VTEC Sound Like

This is what VTEC should sound like. The crossover to the high cams should be linear without any power loss. My car was tuned to make maximum power across the RPM range. This was done in 4th gear.

I dynoed 210whp & 154wtq on a Dynojet.

Car: 2008 Honda Civic Si FG2
Tune: Hondata FlashPro
Mods: I/H/E

VTEC kicks in at 4k RPM all the way to a redline of 8.6k RPM.

"VTEC (which stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is an electronic and mechanical system in some Honda engines that allows the engine to effectively have multiple camshafts. As the engine moves into different rpm ranges, the engine's computer can activate alternate lobes on the camshaft and change the cam's timing. In this way, the engine gets the best features of low-speed and high-speed camshafts in the same engine."

The car waited until the end of that revving to sound the seatbelt chime, it didn't want to interrupt all the awesomeness that was going on

Sounds like an air raid siren revving up.
  • *Car reaches 112mph *Also the car: make sure you put your seatbelt on 🙂

Now I know how Godzilla's atomic breath sound effect was made.
  • It's still so much more satisfying to hear on the older gens. It still sounds good though on the new ones. That pop though is dramatic on the older gens.

I feel like VTEC kicked in at around 4000 RPM

One of the most iconic and best sounds ever. Unless you hear it at 3am, projected through an eBay fartcan.

Sounds like an WWII plane falling down... Edit after 6 years: I didn't mean a Stuka.

OH MAN the memories!... The hondata tune transforms the car. The original engagement from factory at 5600 rpms was brutal. Became such a fun little car at 4000rpm afterwards. I've owned many other great after including a 500hp Evo X but still miss that little car.

The sheer vibration at 8000 revs just gives you an idea of how much these engines endure when ragging the living daylight out of it

i'm a motorcycle (specifically cruisers and tourings) kinda guy, but even with a sound as amazing as a honda magna i can't deny that a VTEC actually sounds pretty damn cool!
