There are new developments in the cold case that has shocked and captivated Canadians. The Muskoka murder mystery (The Fifth Estate) and The Cat Lady Case Podcast (CBC Uncover) told of the disappearance and presumed killing of 77-year-old Joan Lawrence and three other senior citizens in Ontario cottage country more than 20 years ago. The lead police investigator sits down with The Fifth Estate for the first time, talking about developments in the case in a special episode updating the investigation. Police spent years searching for bodies, clues and answers but none of the four missing people has been seen since, none of their bodies ever found and no one has been held accountable for their disappearance. The Fifth Estate has reported on police documents describing the theory that Lawrence was killed to prevent her from reporting theft and fraud related to the so-called retirement properties where she was living. Police say in all, 16 people living on the properties had money stolen.

As an American, I sometimes feel like Canada puts criminals' rights above victims' rights. I'm sure plenty of Canadians might accuse us of being the opposite, but in a case like this, I don't understand why Canada won't arrest these people.

Laan Family: "Yup, it was us. We robbed and killed 4 elderly people." OPP: "This is an ongoing, open investigation and we are seeking additional information."
  • @stevenbartolini
"Just a matter of time" says the cop who's been investigating the missing persons case for 20 years.
  • I came across this story a couple years back and I think of the lady who lived in a garden shed with her cats often. Those people are evil. How can you treat people like that? It’s unreal
  • I looked after my MIL until her death. She was a lively, fun woman. When I think of someone taking advantage of her in her last, most vulnerable years, it makes me sick to my stomach. These people are despicable. May they get their full due.

Elder abuse is right up there with child abuse. It’s so cruel and pointless. Please bring them justice
  • @pinco40
All these wonderful people who saw that poor lady being taken advantage of, and no one took the time to help her out?!!!
  • Followed this case for years and I really can’t believe that in this age of forensic science, these perpetrators are still at large. Such a sad end to these vulnerable people at the hands of such an evil and vile family

This is absolutely horrible elder abuse is ramped, my mother was a victim of it but I got her justice and they paid for it.👍👍👍
  • @KingMatiCBeats
That is just cruel and the fact no one has been arrested is insane.

I've followed this case for years. Thank you Fifth Estate for keeping it 'alive'. Some people may not be familiar with it, some may have info on the Laans family since 1998 and may put pressure on them. I hope some questions will be answered...
  • @xxx-not666
Why have the Laans never been charged with fraud? WHO IN LAW ENFORCEMENT IS PROTECTING THAT FAMILY?
  • @ellebelle8515
We need to take elder abuse seriously. If you suspect it, don't look away. If people had stepped in much earlier, all four of these people could have been rescued from this evil family.

Great job, Bob McKeown & the Fifth Estate. I've followed this story since you've made it public--YOU are the ones giving a voice to the 16 people who died while in the care of the Laan family, including the 4 whose disappearances/deaths were never reported. It's clear to me that if you had not pursued this story the OPP would have allowed these cases to become cold & forgotten. The Laan family stole money from these vulnerable elderly & disabled people & forced them to live in filthy unsanitary dangerous substandard conditions. When they couldn't get more money out of them, the Laans coldbloodedly murdered 4 (and possibly more) of the most vulnerable people in our society. OPP needs to work harder to bring these sociopaths to justice.

What kind of people can be so cruel to a woman that was so kind to animals. Its heartbreaking to hear Dougie s nephew talk about him.
  • @NamooNara
Have fun arresting these people when they are 100 years old, wow great job!
  • It’s incomprehensible that nobody has come forward with information needed to break this case. These missing people were once loved by parents, or spouses or children and deserve so much better than this.
  • It is worth mentioning, that viewing many of these The Fifth Estate programs, the production and camera work on them are quite impressive.

The system fails people. Housing for the poor should be like the health care system. Everyone should have a decent place to live. Especially the elderly

This case bothers me big time ..Makes me very angry and turns my stomach
