Both Irene Williams and Hattie Garce were slaves in the United States. They were interviewed as part of the Slave Narrative WPA project in the late '30's, early '40's. They were asked to recall and sing songs the recall being sung on the plantations of the Old South. Here are two short songs they said were song by American slaves in the 1800's. (The second song sounds a lot like the cadence Appalachian people use, no?) Let me know if you'd like to here more songs this two women recorded. Origin files can be viewed at the Library of Congress in Washington DC #blackhistorymonth #slavery #race
