The National Institute of Mental Health outlines borderline personality disorder as a "serious mental disorder marked by a pattern of instability in moods, behavior, self-image, and functioning." People living with borderline personality disorder experience extreme episodes of depression, anger, and anxiety that can last from a few hours to days.

There are multiple traits that distinguish borderline personality disorder. Some of them are: fear of abandonment, intense and unstable relationships, unclear or unstable self-image, impulsiveness, suicidal behavior, self-harm, explosive anger, and a chronic feeling of emptiness.

The cause of borderline personality disorder is not yet clear, but research suggests that genetics, brain structure and function, and environmental factors, such as a history of child abuse and neglect, may be linked to BPD.
